Flim-flam artist now in SC custody: will face charges in Edgefield County

web posted January 26, 2008
AIKEN – A suspected serial flim-flam artist that is allegedly responsible for countless swindles across Edgefield County has now been taken into custody by Aiken County authorities and will lead to him facing charges in the towns of Johnston and Edgefield and Edgefield County as well as Saluda County. Tyrone Eugene Reid, 40, of Augusta, Georgia, was taken into custody by Richmond County Deputies in mid December but due to the many charges in South Carolina being misdemeanors it seamed unlikely that he would ever be extradited across state lines. That has changed.

Aiken County filed felony charges against Reid as a “habitual offender” for one of the swindles that occurred at the Wal-Mart in Aiken and he is currently being held at the Aiken County Detention Center after extradition.

Authorities said Reid’s extensive criminal record for such crimes made the felony charge possible.

“We’ll get him after Aiken County is done with him,” Edgefield County Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Randy Doran said. It is unknown if Edgefield County, or the towns, may also increase the misdemeanor charges against Reid to felonies. “That will be up to the Solicitor’s Office,” Doran said.

Even under the misdemeanor charges currently filed against Reid he could be facing over two years behind bars, fines, and be forced to make restitution equaling double the amount he is accused of stealing. Increasing the charges to felonies would greatly increase his prison sentences if convicted.
