Jill, Duchess of Hamilton to Visit Aiken SPCA New Shelter Project
web posted January 28, 2012
AIKEN – Author, conservationist,
journalist and historian Jill, Duchess of Hamilton, will be touring the
Aiken SCPA shelter project on January 30, 2012. Her Grace, who
recently complete a 15 year term as Vice President with the Royal
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), will be in
Aiken to meet with SPCA management, staff and donors to learn more
about the Shelter and to share her experiences as a committed animal
welfare advocate.
“I have seen plans for the shelter project and am excited to have the
opportunity to visit the site personally,” said the Duchess. “Our
organizations share similar goals: to prevent cruelty, promote kindness
to and alleviate suffering of all animals. The Aiken SPCA, like
our organization in the UK, is a strong supporter of adoption,” she
continued, “However, the Aiken SPCA’s state-of-the-art Regional Spay
and Neuter Clinic and Marr Education and Training Center are the keys
to solving the larger issue of over population. In other words,
the Aiken SPCA is working to solve the problem and not just react to
it.”
“We are delighted to host Her Grace in Aiken,” said Barbara Nelson,
Board chair of the Aiken SPCA. “Jill has many years of experience
in the UK and internationally addressing many of the issues we face in
Aiken. We look forward to showing her our new facility and
hearing her insights on many animal welfare subjects.”
About Jill, Duchess of Hamilton
Jill, Duchess of Hamilton, former newspaper journalist in both
Australia and London, was born and educated in Sydney. Since 1999
she has spent much time living in the Old City in Jerusalem and in 2005
completed her MA in Near & Middle Eastern Studies with a
distinction in Applied Economics at SOAS, the University of
London. She is currently completing her PhD at SOAS. Five
of her books are either on or connected to the Middle East: Marengo,
the Myth of Napoleon's Horse (Fourth Estate, London, 1999); First to
Damascus (Simon & Schuster, Australia, 1999, three editions); God,
Guns and Israel (History Press, three editions: 2004, 2055 and 2009);
From Gallipoli to Gaza (Simon & Schuster, Australia, 2004) and
Thomas Cook the Holidaymaker (History Press, 2004). She has a
monthly column in The Catholic Herald and also writes occasionally for
The Guardian.
About the RSPCA
The RSPCA was founded in London in 1824, as the world’s first animal
welfare charity. Royal patronage followed in 1837 and Queen
Victoria gave permission to add the royal R in 1840.
The organization’s involvement in the First and Second World Wars makes
up a large part of their history and heritage. Millions of
animals were enlisted to serve alongside British, Commonwealth and
Allied forces, and many RSPCA staff served on the frontline, not
only to serve the country, but to help these animals. Today the
RSPCA remains committed to forming and improving animal welfare law.
The organization has a network of 166 RSPCA branches around England and
Wales, and works with many animal welfare organizations abroad through
an international team. In one year, the RSPCA rescued and
collected 130,033 animals, treated and helped 211,188 animals in
their hospitals and clinics, including neutering 79,810 animals, found
new homes for 83,268 animals, micro-chipped 67,388 animals,
investigated 159,686 cruelty complaints provided 5,653 meals for
animals in their care on Christmas Day.
About the Aiken SPCA
Established in 1935, the Aiken SPCA has placed thousands of needy
animals into loving homes. This success was achieved through the
dedicated efforts of numerous Aiken SPCA employees and volunteers. It
also hinges upon commitment, support and responsibility from our
community.
The Aiken SPCA is a non-profit organization operating under IRS Section
501(c)(3). The organization receives no funding or support from state
or federal agencies or from the ASPCA. They depend upon local donations
to support efforts to save the lives of homeless dogs and cats in the
Aiken community.
The Board of Directors has taken on the long-term goal of reducing pet
overpopulation in the CSRA by providing affordable spay and neuter
services, and teaching values through humane education.
