web
posted January 29, 2009
NEW ELLENTON – New Ellenton Police Chief
Johnnie Hamilton, 55, was pronounced dead at the scene of a two vehicle
collision in the city of Perry, South Carolina Wednesday afternoon.
According to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton, Chief Hamilton failed to
yield the right of way at the intersection of Walker and Poole Roads
and was struck by truck that resulted in the fatality and two others
being injured.
Chief Hamilton was said to be traveling north on Poole Road and entered
the Walker Road intersection around 3:15 pm when his 2008 Crown
Victoria police cruiser was struck by a 1994 dodge truck driven by
Donnie Black of Springfield SC. Chief Hamilton was killed and a
passenger, Maria Kenedy was injured. She and Mr. Black were transported
to Palmetto Richland Memorial hospital in Columbia with serious, but
non-life threatening injuries.
Chief Hamilton was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
Toxicology results are pending. The South Carolina Highway Patrol,
along with the Perry Police Department Chief Ward and the Aiken County
Coroner's Office are investigating this crash. This is the first fatal
crash of 2009 for Aiken County.
