Aiken Man Killed in Motorcycle Crash

web posted February 25, 2013

AIKEN – An early evening traffic collision has claimed the life of an Aiken County Man. 29-year-old Keith Charles Grubbs, of Aiken, was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at Georgia Regents University Emergency Department (MCG) in Augusta. The collision happened at 5:58 pm Sunday on Silver Bluff Road.

According to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton, "Mr Grubbs was the operator of a 2001 Suzuki GSXR 750 motorcycle. He was traveling west on Silver Bluff Rd at a high rate of speed when he struck a Ford F-250 driven by [a man] also of Aiken County. Mr. Johnson was attempting to make a left turn onto Herdon Dairy Rd. when the collision occurred," Carlton said.

Witnesses reported that the motorcycle driver was going in excess of 100 mph at the time of the collision.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the fatality. Alcohol is considered to be a contributing factor along with excessive speed.

Toxicology is pending. Mr. Grubbs was riding with several other motorcyclists; however, none of them were injured or involved in the crash.

This marks the fifth fatality on Aiken County roads this year, Carlton said.
