web
posted March 9, 2010
AIKEN – A 17-month-old boy was pronounced
dead after an apparent drowning incident in Windsor Monday afternoon.
Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said the toddler and a seven-year-old
sibling were at the grandmother’s home when the two went to feed goats
kept on the property. The older child returned without his younger
brother and family members found him in the goldfish pond with a depth
of about 16 inches of water and emergency personnel were summoned to
the scene.
The child was treated by Aiken County EMS and transported to the Aiken
Regional Medical center where he was later pronounced dead.
“According to witnesses, the child was outside in the yard with other
children, when he and a 7 year old went to get some food for some
goats. The 7 year old returned however the 17 month old went missing
for about 15 minutes. The grandmother along with other adults were also
outside and began searching for the child. He was discovered in the
gold fish pond, in about 16" of water,” Coroner Carlton said in a
release.
The circumstances surrounding the child's death are being investigated,
however; no foul play is suspected. An autopsy is scheduled for today
in Newberry. “This appears to be a tragic accident and our prayers go
out to this family,” Coroner Carlton said in the release.
