American Diabetes Association Alert Day Today

web posted March 23, 2010
AIKEN – It’s not our birthday.  It’s not our anniversary.  It’s our wake-up call.  March 23 is the 22nd annual American Diabetes Association Alert Day and Aiken Regional Medical Centers is reaching out to the Aiken and Edgefield Community.

From 9am-2pm Tuesday, March 23, the public is invited to the Aiken Regional Medical Centers Health Information Kiosk in the Aiken Mall for FREE glucose screenings.

Today 57 million Americans are at risk for type 2 diabetes and March 23 is the day to stop diabetes by taking steps towards prevention.  Risk factors include:
•    People over the age of 45 with a family history of diabetes
•    People who are overweight and do not exercise regularly
•    Those with low HDL cholesterol, high triglycerides and high blood pressure, impaired glucose tolerance
•    Certain racial groups (Non-Hispanic Blacks, Hispanic/Latino American, Asian Americans, American Indians, and Alaska Natives
•    Women who had gestational diabetes or who have had a baby weighing 0 lbs or more at birth

Because 4,384 new cases of diabetes are diagnosed every 24 hours and 6 million people are diagnosed with diabetes it’s important to take the appropriate steps towards stopping diabetes and living a healthy life.
