American Diabetes Association Alert Day Today

AIKEN – It’s not our birthday. It’s
not our anniversary. It’s our wake-up call. March 23 is the
22nd annual American Diabetes Association Alert Day and Aiken Regional
Medical Centers is reaching out to the Aiken and Edgefield
Community.
From 9am-2pm Tuesday, March 23, the public is invited to the Aiken
Regional Medical Centers Health Information Kiosk in the Aiken Mall for
FREE glucose screenings.
Today 57 million Americans are at risk for type 2 diabetes and March 23
is the day to stop diabetes by taking steps towards prevention.
Risk factors include:
• People over the age of 45 with a family history of
diabetes
• People who are overweight and do not exercise
regularly
• Those with low HDL cholesterol, high triglycerides
and high blood pressure, impaired glucose tolerance
• Certain racial groups (Non-Hispanic Blacks,
Hispanic/Latino American, Asian Americans, American Indians, and Alaska
Natives
• Women who had gestational diabetes or who have had
a baby weighing 0 lbs or more at birth
Because 4,384 new cases of diabetes are diagnosed every 24 hours and 6
million people are diagnosed with diabetes it’s important to take the
appropriate steps towards stopping diabetes and living a healthy life.
