Bath man takes own life after stand-off with police

web posted June 27, 2009
BATH – A Bath man, who held Aiken County Sheriff’s Deputies at bay after barricading himself in his Railroad Street home for five hours, took his own life Friday morning, Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said. The standoff began around 2 am when Columbia County Investigators and Aiken County Sheriff’s Deputies tried to serve arrest warrants on 36-year-old Martin Jarrett.

Columbia County authorities held several warrants including one for armed robbery and once law enforcement tried to make the arrest Jarrett barricaded the home and at some point fired at least two shots at police.

Around 7 am police heard a gunshot and discovered Jarrett had turned his gun on himself.

Tim Carlton said an autopsy revealed that Mr. Jarrett died from a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. SLED and the Aiken County Coroner's Office are investigating Mr. Jarrett's death.
