Fighter’s death ruled “accidental”
web
posted June 30, 2010
AIKEN – Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton
said the death of 30-year-old mix martial arts fighter Michael Kirkman
would be ruled accidental following an autopsy performed on Tuesday in
Newberry. “Michael Kirkham died from a subarachnoid hemorrhage of the
brain due to the injuries/blows to the head he received during the MMA
match,” Carlton said.
Mr. Kirkham was a participant in the Professional Mixed Martial Arts
Competition at the USCA Convocation Center on Saturday June 26, 2010.
During the 1st round of his professional debut, Mr. Kirkham received
several blows to the head, which caused the referee to stop the bout.
Emergency Medical Technicians worked feverishly after Kirkman went down
and performed CPR as he was transported to Aiken Regional Medical
Center. He remained unconscious with inoperable head injuries and was pronounced dead
at 8:25 Monday morning.
Video of the fight from the SC Athletic Commission is being awaited for
review, Carlton said.
Toxicology results are pending.
