Bank robbery leaves one dead, two in custody
web
posted July 2, 2009
JACKSON – An Aiken County man was shot and
killed by a Jackson Police Officer after a high-speed chase following a
bank robbery at the First Citizen’s Bank in Jackson around noon
Wednesday. Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton identified the man as
30-year-old Jelani Edwards of Aiken. He was pronounced dead on the
scene after firing at a Jackson Police Officer and the officer returned
fire, killing Edwards.
According to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson Police
responded to the 911 call about the bank robbery and began chasing the
suspects as they fled the scene until they crashed on Williams Way in
Jackson. As the three men exited the vehicle, Edwards pulled a firearm
and shot at police when shots were returned and he was killed.
A second suspect surrendered immediately and the third suspect ran into
a wooded area in an attempt to escape. The third man was later arrested
after being found hiding out in a nearby residence.
Phillip Paul and Randy Wilson, both of Aiken County, have been arrested
and will be charged with armed robbery and the possession of a weapon
during the commission of a violent crime.
An autopsy on Mr. Edwards is scheduled for today in Newberry Mr.
Carlton said.
