Accused Carjacker of Edgefield woman now in custody

web posted August 22, 2007
AIKEN – The man police say is responsible for a series of carjackings, one including an Edgefield County woman, is now behind bars after an 11-mile car chase. Gary Lee Murphy, 31, a registered sex offender, is being held in Aiken County after a robbery at the Mani's Mart on Cary Drive in Beech Island on Sunday. Later a North Augusta Police Officer spotted Murphy driving a stolen car and gave chase into Augusta before returning to Aiken County where he was captured after a short foot chase when he abandoned the car.

According to police reports, Mr. Murphy kicked one officer in the head during the arrest.

Lucia Bradham, of Edgefield, was at the Top Notch Car Wash on Washington Rd, Augusta on June 7 when she was approached by a white man that engaged her in a conversation. Shortly afterwards he forced his way into Ms. Bradham’s GMC Yukon and fled the scene. Police say video surveillance tapes later showed Murphy using Ms. Bradham’s charge card to make purchases at the Dillard’s store on Wrightsboro Road.

Ms. Bradham was injured in the carjacking.

Authorities say he then changed clothes and convinced another woman, identified as Dominique Chargois, to give him a ride to the nearby Kroger store where he demanded the car and Ms. Chargois’ personal belongings after arriving at the location. He fled the scene with Ms. Chargois’ black 2004 Ford Mustang, which was later recovered at the Columbia Zoo.

Mr. Murphy faces several felony charges from various area authorities including two counts of robbery by force, larceny of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for blue lights, resisting arrest, giving false information to police, no driver's license, strong arm robbery, and other pending charges.
