Clyburn
Calls on Massey to Denounce Private School Voucher Group
Calls Massey’s positive campaign
pledge ‘misleading’
web
posted October 25, 2007
AIKEN – Representative Bill Clyburn,
candidate for Senate District 25, today called on his opponent, Shane
Massey, to denounce the anti-public education group South Carolinians
for Responsible Government’s latest misleading attack mailer and their
private school voucher agenda.
Representative Clyburn’s criticism of Massey follows yesterday’s attack
mailer sent to voters in Senate District 25. The mailer from the
anti-public education group – South Carolinians for Responsible
Government (SCRG) - attempts to mislead voters on his voting record in
the SC House of Representatives.
Shane Massey, 32, relied on the support of the Columbia-based
anti-public education group to smear his opponent Bill Hixon in the GOP
primary. Mr. Hixon was on the receiving end of multiple negative
attack mailers during the primary and run-off.
Throughout the GOP primary and run-off Mr. Massey continuously claimed
he was engaging in positive campaigning, even challenging his opponent
to sign a “clean campaign pledge’ while SCRG was trashing his opponent
on Massey’s behalf.
“Mr. Massey’s claim of running a positive campaign is misleading.
He has outside groups doing his dirty work so he can keep his hands
clean. If he is serious about a clean campaign, he should
denounce the anti-public education group attacking me and he should
denounce SCRG’s private school voucher agenda,” said Clyburn.
Editor’s note: It is illegal for a candidate to have any contact with a
Political Action Committee (PAC) or their activities. If Mr. Massey
were to attempt to contact, influence, or make suggestions to the PAC
or ask them to stop their activities he would be in violation of
campaign laws in South Carolina. On Tuesday Rep. Clyburn said his
campaign would
not resort to negative tactics and would "stick to the issues"
