Regional Medical Centers points out the Importance of Flu Shots
web
posted October 30, 2007
PSA - AIKEN – The best way to prevent the
flu or lessen its effects is to get a flu shot.
According to the CDC, the ideal time to be immunized against the flu is
as early as October, however, November or December are also acceptable
times, since it takes 10 to 14 days after immunization to reach peak
levels of immunity. The flu season usually is over by early to
mid-February, and the real flu season with large numbers of confirmed
cases does not begin ordinarily until the middle of December.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommends that
those at high risk for the flu and its complications, as well as those
not at risk, should get their flu shots in October or November, though
it is not too late to get vaccinated in December. Those at high risk
include:
- Everyone
older than 65.
- Anyone with
a chronic illness, such as asthma, diabetes, or heart, lung
or kidney disease.
- People with
lowered immunity.
- Pregnant
women who will be in their second or third trimesters during
the flu season.
- Children
between 6 months and 18 years on long-term aspirin therapy.
- Anyone who
lives or works in a chronic care facility.
- Health care
workers.
Aiken Regional Medical Centers in partnership with the Family Pharmacy
will offer flu shots at the ARMC Health Information Center in the Aiken
Mall on Thursday, November 1 and Saturday November 3 from 10 a.m. – 12
p.m. There is a $30 fee.
Flu shots are covered by Medicare
and Medicare will be billed.
