Aiken County suffers two Fatal Collisions over Weekend

AIKEN – Aiken County suffered two traffic fatalities over the weekend in separate collisions, according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.

As reported by Coroner Carlton, A late night vehicle versus pedestrian collision has taken the life of a Gaston SC man. Forty nine year old Monty L. Pettit was pronounced dead at Aiken Regional Medical Center at 1:20 am after being transported there by Aiken County EMS. Mr. Petitt had been struck by a vehicle while walking on Highway 302 near Wagener.

At this time the vehicle has not been located as it failed to stop after the collision. SCHP MAIT is investigating the collision. Autopsy Sunday morning in Newberry SC revealed that Mr. Pettit died from blunt force trauma. Toxicology is pending.
 
A late morning crash has taken the life of Mr. John J. Dickert of North Augusta SC. The 49 year old was traveling north on Highway #1 near Duke Dr. when he slammed into the rear of a semi truck that was stopped in the northbound lane.

Mr. Dickert was driving a 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle. The driver of the semi, a 2006 Freightliner, was 59 year old David Richardson of Aiken SC. According to witness' Mr. Richardson had stopped to allow a passenger out of the semi truck. SCHP is investigating this crash also. The crash happened at about 10:22 am on 11/04/2012. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Toxicology is pending.
