Suspected robber captured

web posted November 20, 2008
AIKEN – Suspected robber Timothy L. Lakes, 23, of Aiken, is now in custody at the Aiken County Detention Center and is being charged with armed robbery and strong armed robbery. A bond hearing is being scheduled. Edgefield County Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Randy Doran said Wednesday that Aiken County deputies located Mr. Lakes at his girlfriend’s house on Sandy Lane around noon.

“He (Lakes) refused to come out of the house but the girlfriend gave permission for deputies to go in and get him,” Doran said. He was taken into custody without incident.

Lakes is accused of two robberies that occurred just hours apart last Tuesday morning, Nov. 11. The first was at the Waffle House on Frontage Road in Aiken County where Lakes is said to have grabbed a steak knife, jumped the counter, and robbed the restaurant around 3:30 am. He dropped the knife before fleeing the scene. Investigators obtained the video surveillance tapes from the Waffle House.

A few hours later Lakes is accused of a similar robbery at the Crossroads Motel on Oscar Drive and Highway 121 in Trenton when he stated he wanted to rent a room and began filling out a registration form. Video footage shows Mr. Lakes jumping the counter, shoving the clerk, then jumping back atop the counter and dragging a cabinet over with him before fleeing. No weapon was used in the second robbery.

In all video and photographs available to law enforcement Mr. Lakes is wearing the same clothing. In addition to witnesses identifying him from photograph line-ups, fingerprint evidence also confirms Lakes as the suspect.

Investigator Doran said no court date is available at this time and that, if convicted; Lakes could be facing a long prison sentence. Armed robbery can carry a sentence between 25 years to life in prison.

Mr. Lakes is currently on probation from a previous robbery in North Carolina.
