Wagener man becomes 46th fatality in Aiken County
web
posted December 22, 2007
AIKEN – A 25-year-old Wagener man was
pronounced dead at the scene of yet another fatal crash in Aiken County
Saturday morning. Joseph D. Gunter died when the Jeep Cherokee he was
driving left the roadway and overturned. Mr. Gunter was not wearing a
seatbelt at the time of the crash, Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton
said.
The crash was reported at approximately 7:53 am Saturday morning.
According to witnesses, Mr. Gunter of Wagener was attending a party in
Aiken and had left at approximately 2 am to take his friend home. He
returned to Aiken after dropping her off.
He left the party a second time at approximately 6:12 am and was
traveling North on New Holland Rd. near Cook's Bridge Rd. when he
apparently lost control of the Jeep Cherokee SUV, left the roadway, the
vehicle overturned, and then struck several trees.
Mr. Gunter was entrapped and had to be extricated by the Couchton
Volunteer Fire Department. The crash is being investigated by the South
Carolina Highway Patrol and the Aiken County Coroner's Office. Mr.
Gunter died from multiple body trauma. Toxicology results are pending.
