SC voters to decide ban on "gay" marriage Edgefielddaily.com web posted April 28, 2005 The issue of “gay” marriage is set to be decided by South Carolina voters next year with a measure to pass a constitutional amendment to ban “gay” marriage. Currently South Carolina law delineates the only recognized union is that of a man and a woman but legislators are worried state laws may be ruled unconstitutional with other states ruling “gay” unions legal. Tuesday the South Carolina House, on a voice vote, agreed to changes the Senate passed on a 36 -1 vote to move the issue forward for a vote of the state residents. The changes the Senate made were to resolve issues involving agreements reached between two people of the same gender that could have been affected by the wording of the amendment. Governor Mark Sanford does not need to sign the measure for it to reach the November 7, 2006 ballot. The measure did have to have a two-thirds majority to have the amendment placed on the ballot however. Bi-partisan support on the measure seems to implicate the measure will pass the simple majority of voters most say. “It’s just another protection against activist judges in other states,” said Rep. Greg Delleney, R-Chester according to The State. Another bill ending common law marriages also won House support. Return to Main Page
