Man Steals iPad, Agrees to Return, Arrested trying to Sell it

MERRIWETHER – A Merriwether woman called the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday to report patron taking her iPad out of her office on Tuesday. After the deputy arrived she informed him that she made contact with the suspect and he admitted to taking the iPad and said he would return it the next day. Instead, he was arrested in Richmond County Georgia trying to sell it.

JOHNSTON – Strom Thurmond High School's varsity football team will be facing off against Saluda High School in Saluda on Friday, September 6th at 7:30 pm. If you would like to purchase tickets, you can purchase them at the Strom Thurmond High School office.  The cost of admission for the game at Saluda is $7.00 per ticket.  Tickets will be on sale from Friday, August 30th to 2:00 pm on Friday, September 6th.  No tickets will be sold after 2:00 pm on September 6th.

Edgefield, SC - "I was in shock because I've never seen anybody actually use a tool or something like that to beat a horse in the ribs with," explains Lindsey Jones. Jones says she watched in horror as a farrier repeatedly beat her horse, Yuma. She says here family was advised by a vet to fit Yuma with shoes for the first time. Under the recommendation of a close friend, a farrier was brought in from Warrenton, Georgia. Jones says when Yuma got frightened, the farrier got violent.

Woman Claims Farrier Beat Horse with Hammer

EDGEFIELD – An Edgefield woman went to the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office to file a report of animal cruelty after the farrier became angry and started hitting her horse with a hammer, ripping the horseshoe off of at least one foot and then beat the horse in the face with the halter lead before leaving.

Aiken County Man Wanted in $13,000 Metal Theft

COUNTY LINE – The Edgefield County Sheriff's Office was alerted to the theft of $13,000 of aluminum from a county manufacturer by the Richmond County Sheriff's Office this week. The man was questioned when he arrived at a scrap metal facility in Augusta trying to sell ten rolls of sheet aluminum.

Bridge Repair Company Reports Full 500 Gallon "Fuel Cell" Stolen

NORTHSIDE – The Scot Bridge Company, currently doing the repairs to the Turkey Creek Bridge on Highway 25 North, reported a 500 gallon fuel cell (storage tank) containing diesel fuel missing when they arrived at work on Monday morning. A second fuel cell was left untouched. The estimated value is said to be $10,000.

MERRIWETHER – A neighbor of a man on the 100 block of Ruby Road called the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office to report the neighbor's front door being open Monday. He contacted the owner as well, who met with deputies on the scene.

Teen Crashes Car, All Occupants Run from Scene

EDGEFIELD – An early morning crash on Brooks Street in Edgefield around 1 am Sunday left Edgefield Police searching for the driver and five injured passengers who all fled the scene after the car they were in crashed into a tree after taking out a mailbox and a portion of a homeowners fence. The driver, 17-year-old Joseph Poole, told police he lost control of the car while showing off for his "friends", a report states.

North Augusta Teen Arrested after Running from DNR Officer

TRENTON – A North Augusta teens has been arrested after refusing to stop when a Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Officer attempted to stop the teen on Vann Road around 12:30 am Saturday morning. Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputies were called to aid in an effort to stop the teen, who, according to radio traffic, also had a gun.

Search for Elderly Woman Successful Due to Co-operation and Planning

COUNTY LINE – The Edgefield County Sheriff's Office was alerted to a missing 85-year-old elderly woman that had been missing for over an hour and a half late Saturday night. Within minutes a series of planned protocols were followed that ended in the successful recovery of the missing woman. Shortly after the search began, Chief Investigator Randy Doran called for the Bloodhound Team and a SLED helicopter with infrared cameras to aid in the search.

Massive Search Underway for Missing Elderly Woman :Update - Found Under House

COUNTY LINE – A massive search is underway for an 85-year-old woman with dementia who walked away from the family's Rock Creek Road home Saturday night. The family searched for the woman and then notified the Sheriff's Office around 11 pm. By 11:30 pm extra deputies were called out with Edgefield, Johnston Police, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and a SLED helicopter called to join the search.

The woman reported she had been home all day and left for a short time and discovered the damage when they returned an hour later.

Sable Lane Home Burglarized, Damaged

TRENTON – A caretaker for an unoccupied home on the 50 block of Sable Lane called the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office Thursday morning after arriving and finding the home had been burglarized. The man told the responding deputy that he last checked on the property on the evening of Friday, August 16. Over $2,500 of property was stolen as well as copper wiring.

Gallup: Unemployment Rate Jumps from 7.7% to 8.9% In 30 Days

Counterfeit $20 Bills Turn up in Edgefield, Trenton

COUNTY – Reports of counterfeit money turning up are not rare in Edgefield County, however; there seems to be an uptick this summer. This week alone there have been two reports of fake $20 bills with different serial numbers being seized by police.

Traffic Stop Leads to Felony Charges including Escape

MERRIWETHER – An Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputy on routine patrol spotted a red and silver GMC truck traveling southbound on Highway 26 with no tail lights Monday night and turned around to conduct a traffic stop to advise the driver. Once the driver pulled over, who admitted her drivers license was suspended, it was the passenger that began causing problems by refusing to stay inside the truck and eventually tried to escape after being arrested.

Stevens Creek Rising, More Rain Forecast

MERRIWETHER – Stevens Creek crested just below the 29 foot level on the northern section of the waterway near Highway 23 around 2 pm Tuesday. However, downstream at Woodlawn Road and even further down at Dock Drive the water is still rising. To make matters worse, an extended heavy downpour Tuesday afternoon was adding even more water to the waterway.

Currytowne Station Man reports Gun Theft

MERRIWETHER – A Currytowne Boulevard man returning from out of town called the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office after arriving home and finding a screen in one of the windows had been removed. At first the homeowner did not notice anything missing until he discovered a very special gun had been removed from his closet.

Flood Warning Issued for Stevens Creek Area

MERRIWETHER – A flood warning was issued at 2 pm Monday advising that Stevens Creek has reached well beyond flood stage with water levels at 28.3 feet. Flood stage is listed at 19 feet, the National Weather Service said in a release. The water level is expected to rise overnight Monday to 29.8 feet, which forecasters said would flood the Garrett Road Bridge.

COLUMBIA – Governor Nikki Haley toured Pendarvis Farms Monday to survey the damage caused by excessive summer rains and discuss the request for a Secretarial disaster designation from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The governor was joined by Commissioner of Agriculture Hugh Weathers, USDA Farm Service Agency State Executive Director Harry L. Ott, Jr,. and South Carolina Farm Bureau representative Larry McKenzie.

Johnston Police Arrest Man that Struck House

JOHNSTON – The man that crashed into a parked vehicle and a house on Aiken Avenue Thursday night and then fled the scene on foot has been arrested. Antolin Hernandez, 31, of Johnston, was taken into custody early Friday morning according to a report released on Monday. After causing at least $5,000 damage to the homeowners pickup truck and over $1,800 in damage to the home, Hernandez was arrested on traffic charges and has been released on bond.

Merriwether Man Reports Theft of Radiators from Vehicles Sunday

MERRIWETHER – A Wind Road man called the Sheriff's Office Sunday morning after waking to find a person or persons entered his property and began stealing the radiators from some of the vehicles parked in his yard overnight. The thieves were successful in removing two but either could not get the third removed or became spooked and left with what they had.

Driver of Disabled Vehicle Arrested

COUNTY LINE – Have you ever just had "one of those days" when nothing seems to go right. Ramon Ricardo Patten, 23, of Pine Tree Road in Trenton, has one late Friday night. An Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputy was parked at Trailside Drive and Highway 25 when a silver Mercury broke down at his location. The deputy walked over to assist the driver and then spotted a pistol under the front driver's seat.

Two Hit & Runs Reported Sunday Evening

COUNTY – Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputies and State Troopers worked two hit and run collisions  Sunday evening, luckily no one was injured in either incident. The first report came in a little after 7 pm Sunday on Highway 25 near Vann Road. The caller reported she was struck and the pickup truck left the scene heading towards Trenton.

The Edgefield County Council will be addressing the possibility of a 1% sales tax for capital improvements in the county at their September 3 meeting. There is no ordinance to place the tax on the agenda at this time. Under discussion will be approving to create the "committee" that will meet to determine how to spend the $900,000 annually the additional tax is expected to collect.

Witness Arrested for Perjury for Burglary Trial Testimony

EDGEFIELD – One of the key defense witnesses in the burglary in the first degree trial of Jimmie Markese Holloway, 24, which ended in a hung jury in April, has been arrested for allegedly giving false testimony during the trial. Testimony that greatly helped the defense. Assistant Solicitor Ervin Maye pounced under cross examination and warned Nakita Canty she was under oath.

Thieves Target Lawn Equipment and Tools

COUNTY – A Stephens Road woman called the Sheriff's Office Wednesday afternoon after she took a two hour break in doing yard work and returned to find all of the lawn equipment missing. She gave an estimated value of around $600. On Tuesday a Vann Road man reported returning home to find his garage had been burglarized with over $1,300 in tools missing.

EDGEFIELD – Fredrick Dale Harvey Jr., 27, plead guilty in General Sessions Court Wednesday afternoon in the shooting death of Marshall "Mark" Butler Jr. on August 19 of last year at a popular party spot called Stevie T's. After a brief altercation Butler is said to have hit Harvey and Harvey then drew a pistol and shot Butler twice in the head. Butler collapsed a died before help could arrive.

Child Molester Sentenced to 18 Years

EDGEFIELD – An accused child molester admitted his guilt in the molestations of at least two young boys that took place over a year long period. Jyneel Deontai McDuffie, 18, was charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct in the first degree and plead to two counts of criminal sexual conduct in the second degree through a plea agreement. His victims ranged in ages of between 4 to 7 years old and the second between 11 and 14 years old.

Cagle gets 15 years After Crime Spree

EDGEFIELD – A man that terrorized the Merriwether, Sweetwater and Westside communities for over two weeks committing burglaries, stealing cars, and even kidnapping an elderly woman in her own home before being captured, had his day in court Wednesday. Marc Anthony Cagle, 58, plead guilty to burglary in the first degree under a plea agreement that saw a number of other felony charges being dropped in exchange for the guilty plea.

EDGEFIELD – Edgefield Police were called to a suspicious person around the Kids Korner Daycare on Center Springs Road just after 9 pm Sunday. One of the drivers for the Senior Citizens Center reported the incident. When officers arrived they found a gray Saturn Ion parked behind the building. A check of the tag came back to Gamil Lamont Lopez, 31, who was arrested back in January for sexual battery to a student and was later terminated from the School District.

Gun Dealer Reports Theft of Pistol

EDGEFIELD – The owner of Edgefield Rod & Gun, located in the back of Crouch Hardware, called Edgefield police after discovering a pistol missing from the gun case. After the owner spoke with employees it is believed the theft took place on Saturday following the clerk stating she dealt with three young black males at the store on Saturday and found two of the three in the back of the store where the gun display case is located and ran them out.

JOHNSTON – More details in the horrific head on collision Saturday evening on Highway 121 that left four people entrapped in the two vehicles have been released. 22-year-old Fernando Santiago-Garcia is being charged with felony DUI with great bodily injury and no South Carolina drivers license by the Highway Patrol. The Edgefield County Sheriff's Office is charging on use of a vehicle without permission. Garcia is also found to be at fault for the collision.

Highway 121 Crash Blocks all Traffic Saturday Evening

JOHNSTON – Four people were transported to the Trauma Center in Augusta following a two car collision on Highway 121 between Trenton and Johnston Saturday evening just after 7 pm. The four occupants of the two vehicles were trapped inside as Trenton and Johnston Firefighters arrived on the scene along with EMS and Sheriff's Deputies. All traffic on the highway was stopped for nearly two hours as the rescue was underway.

POLL: 71% Oppose Additional Sales Tax

COUNTY – According to Edgefield Daily's poll over the last weeks, 71% of respondents adamantly reject the idea of an additional sales tax to fund county "improvement" projects. 15% support the tax without knowing what projects would be funded. 13% say that it would depend on the projects listed at the time of the vote. 1% were "unsure". The tax was up for discussion at the Edgefield County Council meeting last Tuesday night when they agreed to appoint a committee to identify specific projects related to the tax.

Burglary Trial Ends with Hung Jury

EDGEFIELD – A two day burglary trial of 38-year-old Maurice Anthony Odom ended in a mistrial after the jury could not come to a unanimous verdict in the case. Odom is charged with the burglary of the IGA Food Store in Johnston that took place in October of 2007 when he and an accomplice are accused of throwing cement blocks through one of the plate glass windows and making off with over $2,500 in cigarettes.

Man Escapes Injury in Roll-over Crash

EDGEFIELD – Edgefield County 911 Dispatch received a call around 12:45 Thursday of a single car crash with an overturned vehicle and the driver still inside. Edgefield County Sheriff's deputies, EMS, a First Responder and the Edgefield Fire Department converged on the scene minutes later. The first responder on the scene said the dust from the crash was still settling when approaching the scene.

MERRIWETHER – A Merriwether man returned to his Briggs Haven Circle home around 3:30 Tuesday afternoon to discover it had been burglarized and ransacked. He was asked to wait on responding deputies before entering the home further. The man said he felt something was afoot when he saw a piece of black duct tap on the back door window when he arrived home after being gone since 6:30 that morning.

A scam that the Better Business Bureau says is affecting utility customers throughout the United States and Canada has also impacted SCE&G customers. Numerous customers have reported instances of individuals portraying themselves as SCE&G employees over the phone and warning them that they’re late on their utility bill.

The old fashion one-on-one customer service butcher shop is the brainchild of Robert Brazell and Eric Hutto. "We want to bring back the personal contact between the customer and the retailer," Mr. Brazell said. "You can't get that anywhere else. You walk into a grocery store and pick through pre-cut meat and settle on what's in the meat case." That will be a thing of the past when the butcher shop opens.

Man Flown to Trauma Center after Being Ejected in Crash

JOHNSTON – A single car crash on Bland Baptist Road ended with the driver being ejected and his passenger suffering numerous injuries after the driver lost control of the Chevy Trailblazer as he turned onto Bland Baptist Road off of Highway 23. The SUV flipped at least twice ejecting the driver while the female passenger remained inside the vehicle. When First Responders arrived on the scene the man was found unconscious and non-responsive about 10 yards from the overturned vehicle.

Three Arrested Allegedly Trying to Smuggle Drugs into Edgefield Prison

EDGEFIELD – The Federal Correction Institution in Edgefield notified Edgefield Police that they were in possession of three people from Florida that were found to be in possession of balloons filled with marijuana when they came to visit an inmate Friday afternoon. During a search guards found 38 small balloons wrapped with black tape with a total of 53.6 grams (nearly 2 ounces) of marijuana inside.

Three Injured in Single Car Crash

EDGEFIELD – Three people were injured in a single car crash on Highway 25 north around 2 pm Monday with an Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputy witnessing the crash. According to information provided at the scene, the driver of a Nissan Versa was traveling northbound and as he rounded a curve the just drove straight off the roadway crossing the southbound lane, going down a deep embankment, flipped at least twice, struck a tree and then came to rest upside down.

Hit and Run Driver Runs after Traffic Stop

MERRIWETHER – The driver involved in a hit and run collision with a Dixie LP truck on Key Road fled the scene and was spotted a short time later near the intersection of Martintown Road and Briggs Road. When the Sheriff's Deputy attempted a traffic stop the driver stopped and fled on foot, resulting in a foot chase. The passenger remained in the vehicle during the foot chase.

GRANITEVILLE – Graniteville Church of God will hosts its first annual golf tournament at Midland Valley Country Club on Saturday August 17th.  Registration is $260 per team or $65 per player.  Format is Captain’s Choice with a shotgun start at 9am.  Food and prizes will be provided, including prizes for long drive and closest to the pin.  Proceeds will be used to support The Outreach Ministries, whose mission is helping the disadvantage and elderly.
