STHS Girls Varsity Basketball Recap

JOHNSTON-- The Strom Thurmond High School Girls Varsity Basketball Team, pulled out a win against Aquinas High School, with a score of 45-24 on Monday night, excellent game for the Girls after not playing for two weeks.  However the Girls fell to Grovetown High School on the night after their victory.

News Release: Road Closures Due to Flooding

STATE-- Again this week, many areas of South Carolina are experiencing heavy rains. Today, Dec. 30, 2015, twenty-nine roads were closed in 12 counties due to flooding or damage caused by the heavy rains that have fallen over the last 24 hours. The counties that have been impacted are: Abbeville, Cherokee, Fairfield, Florence, Greenville, Greenwood, Lancaster, Laurens, Lexington, Newberry, Saluda and Spartanburg.

Red Cross Assisting Aiken Family After Home Fire

AIKEN- American Red Cross disaster-trained volunteers are assisting a family, whose home, located on Cherokee Street in Aiken, was damaged by a fire earlier today. Aiken Fire Department responded to the blaze. The Red Cross is helping two adults by providing financial assistance for food, clothing, temporary lodging, and other essentials, comfort kits, and referrals to partner agencies to assist with their recovery.

MERRIWETHER-- Right before Christmas, a man in Merriwether contacted the Sheriff's Office stating that an unknown person had come to his land, and cleared all the brush, and trees from his property, and some type of equipment was used to do so.

Four Arrested in ECSO Raid

MERRIWETHER-- Four people were arrested Tuesday, Dec. 22, by the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office as the result of a raid on a residence at 32 Rainforest Lane in North Augusta (Edgefield County). An ECSO incident report details how deputies with the ECSO as well as authorities with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and the federal ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms) responded to the aforementioned addressed to execute a search warrant after receiving information detailing drugs, weapons, and stolen items at the residence.

Still Missing: Enclosed Utility Trailer Stolen with ATV Inside

EDGEFIELD- On Thursday, Nov 19,  the Edgefield Police Department was dispatched to a business on  Buncombe Street where an enclosed Utility Trailer with an ATV inside was stolen. The trailer was parked next to the business and it had a hitch lock that was broken off of the trailer hitch and left on the ground.  The owner had left his shop around 10:00pm on  Wednesday the 18th and noticed it missing the next morning.

SRS Public Tour Registration Now Open

JOHNSTON-- Strom Thurmond Career and Technology Center’s (STCTC) Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) Chapter raised funds during the football season selling “Pink Out” shirts and rally rags. “We were excited about donating the money we raised for mobile breast imaging in rural areas,” boasted Alexis Gordon, HOSA vice-president and Health Science III student. HOSA members raised over $150 during the t-shirt sale.

Bizarre Relay Race Brings Joy to those in Need this Holiday Season

AIKEN-- Dozens of contractor employees at the U.S. Department of Energy Savannah River Site (SRS) recently combined zany fun with athletic competition to create a race like no other, all for a good cause. Each year, the “Dash for Bikes, Walk for Trikes” relay race raises thousands of dollars to purchase bicycles and tricycles for the SRS Toys for Tots campaign.

ATC Student Veterans to Benefit from “Bridge the Gap” Sponsorship

AIKEN-- Aiken Technical College (ATC) and the Aiken-Augusta Wounded Warrior Charity Golf Classic Committee (Committee) have signed the Bridge the Gap Veteran Sponsorship agreement which will benefit student veterans at the College.
The sponsorship, signed Wednesday, will help “bridge the gap” and enable more veterans to complete their education, said Jack Morrison, chair of the committee.

EDGEFIELD-- The town of Edgefield celebrated their 42nd Christmas parade Sunday with mild temperatures, and sunny skies.  People were lined down all of Main Street, and children inched towards the edge of the curb to grab handfuls of candy as it was thrown from the various floats, and to get a glimpse of Santa Clause!

Bill Filed to Give Voters Decision on Bringing Confederate Flag Back

AIKEN-- The Confederate Flag taken down almost 5 months ago but now Aiken State House Representative Chris Corley wants you to decide whether it will stay down. "They can vote to put it back where it was or they can vote to leave it where it is in the Confederate Relic Room," Republican State Representative Chris Corely said.Corley voted against the flag coming down in July, but says he's more upset with the process  in how it was taken down.

Finalist for Superintendent for the Edgefield County School Board Announced

COUNTY-- Due to health reasons, Greg Anderson announced in July he would be retiring as the Superintendent for the district on December 31 for health reasons.  Dr. Sandra Caliham McMullen was named interim superintendent in the meantime.

Dr. Cynthia Pitts, Regional Workforce Advisor, organized the tour and invited business and education leaders from the Upper Savannah area. “I wanted people in our area to see the impact that Boeing is having on our state and to gain awareness about the employment opportunities Boeing offers. Boeing is recruiting outside the Charleston area,” explained Pitts.

Aiken Woman Killed After Tree Falls on Her

AIKEN-- Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton confirmed that 63 year old Eloise Edwards, of Aiken died after being pinned under a tree.  Edwards was pronounced dead at her home on Main Drive.
