Letter: I'm 73, and I'm Tired
web posted January 29, 2016
Dear Editor,
I'm 73. Except for one semester in college when jobs were scarce and a      six-month period when I was between jobs, but job-hunting every day, I've worked,  hard,  since I was 18. Despite some health challenges, I still put in 50-hour weeks, and haven't called in sick in seven or eight years. I make a good salary, but I didn't inherit my job or my income, and I worked to get where I am. Given the economy, there's no retirement in sight, and I'm tired. Very tired.

A Gathering Place No More
By Tom Poland
web posted January 29, 2016
LIFE DOWN SOUTH-- Look closely. Long time since juice came out of that electric meter on the left and kerosene pump on the right. Been a long time, too, since that screen door slapped shut for good. A sepia-toned image from bygone days, lonely Monticello Mercantile reminds us of times when country stores sold joy. Half-gallon jars with red lids held cookies. Countertops glittered with penny candy, Mary Janes, Lifesavers, and Bazooka Joe bubblegum.

RELIGION-- I have not written an article in a few weeks. Do you want to know why? I got out of the habit of doing it. My routine was to weekly devote and hour to writing the column on Monday mornings before Good News Club. This was ingrained in my schedule for the past six years of writing for Edgefield Daily, but I missed a week, then I missed another. Then I recycled a column from a few years back. Then I did not even notice that I did not write one, because the holidays came went. A good productive activity for me, writing and prayerfully beneficial to others was lost because I broke a good habit.
