Brush Fire Reports Grow as Temps Rise

COUNTY – As temperatures top 100 degrees, the number of brush fires being reported continues to grow with nearly a dozen being reported this week, three on Friday alone. With dry conditions and high heat undergrowth, grass, and wooded areas are tinderboxes just waiting for a spark to burst into flames. A fire on both sides of Highway 25 just south of Padgett Road was touched off after house movers struck a power line causing it to fall igniting the fires around 4 pm.

EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield Dixie Youth Baseball 8 and Under All-Star team recently placed Runners-Up in the 2012 District 3 Tournament held in Batesburg-Leesville. Edgefield opened the first round with a 13-0 win over rival, Johnston. Then in the second round they found their first loss against Clinton, 5-8.

COUNTY – According to forecasters, daytime highs starting Friday will top the 100 degree mark for at least the following four days and could continue into the Fourth of July holiday. The forecast for Edgefield County is 101 on Friday and could top 103 by Saturday with heat indexes topping 110. Protecting yourself from heat related illnesses is important as well as recognizing the symptoms which can be life-threatening.

Off Duty Deputy Discovers Church Break-In

JOHNSTON – An off duty Edgefield County Sheriff's Shift Sergeant riding by the Philippi Baptist Church on Steeple Drive in Johnston just before 7 pm noticed a door to the church had been forced open and notified dispatch. The deputy remained on the scene until on duty deputies and a church member could arrive.

Neighbor Foils Possible Burglary

MERRIWETHER – A Copeland Circle resident called to report a possible burglary in progress Tuesday morning after seeing a man trying to kick in the front door of a home next door. Sheriff's Deputies converged on the home but the suspect fled in a "Champaign colored Lincoln" before deputies could arrive. No entry was made into the home and the witness told officers that the suspect fled after seeing he was being watched.

Storage Units Burglarized in Edgefield

EDGEFIELD – A Sheriff's Deputy noticed the gate open on the storage building on Star Road Tuesday afternoon and had dispatch call the owner to inspect the property for possible break-ins to the individual storage units. After the owner arrived it was determined that three units had been burglarized, one belonging to a local church.

Suspicious Activity Results in Drug Arrests

MERRIWETHER – Reports of possible drug use, shots fired, and suspicious activity at a vacant house on Murrah Forest Drive led to property checks on the home by Sheriff's Deputies. After an anonymous tip shortly before 1 am Tuesday, deputies located and arrested 31-year-old Christopher David Hargrove and 18-year-old Whitney Breann Jordon on drug charges at the home.

Trenton Home Robbed Within 3-Hour Window

TRENTON – A Trenton woman returned to her home on the 300 block of Highway 121 Saturday night after being gone for just over three hours to find she had been burglarized. A responding deputy noted that pry marks were found on the back door and appeared to be the point of entry and exit during the burglary.

Michael Gordon Jones, 39, was arrested after being caught speeding 65 mph in a 45 mph zone on Woodlawn Road. It was not the speeding ticket that landed Jones in jail, it was the culmination of situations that transpired following the traffic stop making it more that worthy of the nomination.

Fatal Crash Claims Life of JET Student

JOHNSTON – A single car crash has claimed the life of a JET Middle School student Wednesday morning, Deputy Corner David Burnett said. Deshon Surry, 15, died from massive trauma received during the crash around 9:55 am. Burnett said it appears Surry was an unrestrained passenger in the car.

EDGEFIELD – Iva is on a roll, the big team with the little name man handled the competition during the Sub-District 3 All Star Tournament in Laurens this past weekend. The team defeated Clinton 10-0, Abbeville 8-0 and perennial powerhouse Mid Carolina 11-1. Friday night they may get their first test of the post season when they meet undefeated Edgefield at the District Tournament in Johnston.

JOHNSTON – There will be a Marine Veteran walking through Johnston on Wednesday, June 20. He will arrive at Jim Satcher Chrysler Ford around 3pm, where he will receive dinner, and spend the night. Shoplifter Arrested for Shoplifting after Release from Jail

EDGEFIELD – Gerri Lynn Johnson, 32, of Edgefield, may want to rethink her penchant for shoplifting and pursue other fields of employment. Workers at the Fred's in Apple Square called 911 around 4:08 Wednesday afternoon to report a shoplifter at the store who had just left in a silver van. Sheriff's Deputies and an Edgefield Police office located the van in the parking lot of the Bi-Lo nearby moments later.

Man Stabbed on Community Road, Female Suspect in Custody

COUNTY LINE – An altercation between a man and a woman left the man with stab wounds to his face and a woman being taken into custody a short time later Wednesday evening. Details of the incident are incomplete at this time, however; the woman is said to have stabbed the man in his face and he was transported to University Hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Burglary Leads to Theft of Wave Runner

The person or persons involved made entry into the shop by prying open a window and then unlocking a large shop door to steal the watercraft.

Safety Checkpoint Leads to Drug Arrest

EDGEFIELD – A Safety Checkpoint conducted Friday night by Edgefield Police, Sheriff's Deputies and the SC Highway Patrol led to an Aiken man being arrested for possession with the intent to distribute cocaine. COLUMBIA – Eleventh Circuit Solicitor Donnie Myers has been charged with having an open container of alcohol in his car after a Highway Patrol trooper stopped him for suspicion of driving under the influence. Myers, 67, was given a field sobriety test, issued a ticket and allowed to drive home after the 15-minute traffic stop two weeks ago near his home in Lexington County. No action has been taken to reprimand Myers, but it is not the first time he has run into trouble for having an open container of alcohol in his car.

Man Flees Traffic Stop for 6th Driving under suspension Charge

EDGEFIELD – An Edgefield County Sheriff's deputy on routine patrol spotted a blue Lincoln Continental traveling north on Highway 25 traveling at 72 mph in a 55 mile an hour zone. The deputy turned around to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle which stopped at Simmons Road. The driver then exited the vehicle and ran into the woods. The deputy gave chase but was unable to apprehend the fleeing driver.

She was air-lifted to the MCG Trauma Center and remained in very critical condition until her passing at 11:25 am Monday morning. Five Injured in Bus Crash, One Air-Lifted to MCG

JOHNSTON – An early morning bus crash left five Hispanic farm workers injured with one of them being flow to the MCG Trauma Center in Augusta. EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield Town Council gave final reading to the 2012-2013 budget Monday night with a unanimous vote. A vote in May put a monthly $15 "Public Works Fee" into the budget adding a tax of $180 a year to Edgefield residents after being exempted from property taxes since 2006. One of Edgefield’s most known and loved residents is in need of our community support and prayers. Samuel Merriweather, “Sam”, as he is known, has been a well-respected “cook” throughout Edgefield County for over 20 years.  He is the father of six beautiful children and now a new grandfather.

COUNTY LINE – A Jacob Road woman called to report her home burglarized after returning from work Thursday just after noon. The front door was found kicked in and the back patio door was shattered. After entering the home the woman found appliances missing from the kitchen.

Prayer Warriors to Converge on Town Square for Lori Brazell Hutto

EDGEFIELD – The Town of Edgefield and Edgefield County have closed ranks to offer prayers for one of their own. Lori Hutto, wife of Eric Hutto and daughter of Robert and Karen Brazell, remains in very critical condition following a horrific head on collision on May 21 on Star Road. The families are standing vigil at her side around the clock.

Body Identified, No Foul Play

EDGEFIELD – A body found at an abandoned mobile home on Casalina Drive Tuesday afternoon has been identified following an autopsy. Deputy Coroner David Burnett said Juniel A. Wilson, 58, was identified after conducting interviews and information collected at the scene.

Strom Thurmond Class of 2012

COUNTY – The Strom Thurmond Class of 2012 will make the walk across the stage tonight to receive their Diploma after four years of academic work to graduate. Edgefield Daily salutes the graduates on their accomplishment and will have a report on the graduation ceremony on Monday. Valedictorian Melanie Ann McKinney (left) plans to attend Clemson University and major in Math. Salutatorian Cody James Clester (right) plans to attend USC-A for two years and then transfer to the main campus to complete his degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Edgefield County Alliance June Meeting

EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield County Alliance will hold its next meeting on Monday, June 11, 2012 at 7:30 am Piedmont Technical College, Edgefield Campus. Breakfast will be served. A small donation of $3- $5 to help cover the cost is requested.  Everyone is invited to attend. Speaker for the meeting will be Amy Dowell, Operations Manager for the SC Works Centers Upper Savannah Region.

COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Emergency Management Division’s 2012 South Carolina Hurricane Guide is available starting today, Friday, June 1, the beginning of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season. The S.C. Hurricane Guide will be in nine coastal newspapers Friday and will be available for download at www.scemd.org.
