Shooting Sends One to MCG Trauma Center

WESTSIDE – A Friday evening shooting incident has left one man being transported to the MCG Trauma Center with a gunshot to the neck and or head and a second person being taken into "investigative custody" shortly after arriving at the Edgefield County Hospital with the wounded victim.

Edgefield County Sheriff's Office Raids Suspected Video Poker Locations Friday

COUNTY – The Edgefield County Sheriff's Office conducted several simultaneous raids on suspected illegal video poker locations across the county. Several cars were impounded and at least 28 poker machines were seized at the "Pit Stop" on Highway 25 alone. "This is the result of a two year investigation," Capitan Chris Wash said.

He has previously been elected to serve as Mayor of Edgefield and in the SC House of Representatives, as well as serving as county administrator and on the staff of Senator Strom Thurmond.

North Augusta Woman Killed by Her Own Car

NORTH AUGUSTA – A North Augusta woman was killed Wednesday night after being run over by her own car in the driveway of her home around 6:45 pm, Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said in a release. "83 year old, Margaret E. Phillips of North Augusta was pronounced dead at Georgia Health Sciences Emergency Room at 7:34 pm," Carlton said.

Man Arrested after Walking in on Woman in Shower

MERRIWETHER – The Edgefield County Sheriff's Office was called to a home on Ryan Ranch Court Wednesday night after a man walked in on the homeowner's wife taking a shower. The woman's husband said while he was in the back yard he heard a car drive up and moments later heard his wife scream "Get out". The husband ran inside and found the man in the living room.

Convicted Felon and Sex Offender Found in Possession of Stolen Weapon

EDGEFIELD – Edgefield Police were monitoring a call that the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office was on regarding a pregnant woman walking along Highway 19 near Trenton a little after 10 Saturday night. Recognizing the name of the woman, Edgefield Police went to her home on Gray Street and saw a black male driving her car backing out of a parking space and into the roadway to leave. When the driver spotted the officer turning around he then pulled into another parking space.

Man Charged with Animal Cruelty Requests Jury Trial

EDGEFIELD – A Nothside man charged with animal cruelty after calling the Sheriff's Office to remove a steel trap from his dog's foot that had been there for at least three weeks, which resulted in the trap and the injured foot falling off as the officer attempted to removed the trap, was in Magistrate Court today with his lawyer and requested a jury trial.

Megan Sherman and Lauren Williams play for CSRA Heat Volleyball Club on the 16 Gold Power Team based out of Augusta, Georgia and sanctioned under the USA Junior Olympic Volleyball (USAV) Club. This is the 3rd straight year Megan Sherman has been selected All-Region Team and the 2nd straight year that Lauren Willimas has been selected All-Region Team.

Anderson Tapped as New School Superintendent

JOHNSTON – In the regularly scheduled School Board meeting Tuesday night, it was announced that Edgefield Attorney Greg Anderson will be the next Edgefield County School Superintendent. The School Board narrowed down its search last Thursday night from 19 to two candidates. Anderson said when he applied for the position he would serve for no longer than three years.

Sports Bar Owner Cited for Violations after Complaints

JOHNSTON – The Johnston Sports Bar is the source of repeated complaints about excessive noise and the owner, Alexander Hamilton, has been cited before. In that case he won in a jury trial because the jury believed that the Sheriff's Deputy was closer than 200 feet (as required by ordinance). After receiving yet another complaint, deputies were back out at the bar on Saturday morning and cited Hamilton for two violations.

Jacob McKie Road Home Burglarized

COUNTY LINE – A Jacob McKie Road man called the Sheriff's Office Sunday afternoon to report finding a burglary to a "Pond House" that was currently being renovated into a home on other property he owned. Fortunately for the property owner and Investigators, a witness was able to provide "substantial information" on "several subjects" that were seen on the property around the time the burglary took place.

The Edgefield County School District contributed the Activity Bus and a driver to take to volunteers to their starting locations and picked them up after completing their roadway. The event was headed up by Merriwether Fireman Chris Hoffmann, who also serves on the Edgefield County School Board.

Angry Parent Facing Charges for Disturbing School

TRENTON – A Douglas Elementary School parent is facing possible criminal charges after barging into a third grade classroom and yelling at the teacher in front of students on Thursday morning. The man walked behind the teacher's desk and stood "six inches from her," while yelling making the teacher feel threatened and the students afraid.

Victim of House Fire Identified

EDGEFIELD – Edgefield County Coroner Thurmond Burnett released the name of the man found in the remains of a Derrick Road home that burned to the ground early Thursday morning. Clyde Clay Jr., 61, was identified following an autopsy in Newberry. "The cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning and thermal injuries," Deputy Coroner David Burnett said.

County Budget to Add Deputies with No Tax Increases

EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield County Council held their first budget work session Thursday night to go over the proposed 2012-2013 Fiscal Year $8.5 million Budget with a provision to supply the Sheriff's Office with two additional road deputies. There was good news for taxpayers as well with no tax increases, and due to an increase in the Local Option Sales Tax revenues, property tax bills will actually be going down.

Body Found in Remains of Johnston Fire

JOHNSTON – Johnston and Trenton Firemen responding to a call of a structure fire on Derrick Road late Wednesday night has resulted in the discovery of a body of an unknown victim found in the remains of the debris after the fire was extinguished. Firefighters were called to the scene shortly after midnight when a passing motorist saw the flames as they traveled along Highway 191.

Suspected Burglar Caught on Trail Cam in Custody

JOHNSTON – A suspected burglar has been arrested following his picture being taken during the commission of his crime by a Trail Cam. Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputies were given a tip the suspect was at Brewer's Scrap Metal yard in Trenton Wednesday afternoon and they missed him by moments. A BOLO (be on the lookout) was broadcast and a Johnston Police Officer spotted the green Ford Explorer he was driving and made a traffic stop that resulted in the arrest.

Shamrock Run Top 25 Runners Released

EDGEFIELD – The Top 25 runners of the Shamrock Run have been released. Robert Boland, 16, of Aiken County, won the race with a time of 13:31 followed by Strom Thurmond's Dustin Stewart, 17, with a time of 14:18, and 14-year-old Ed Williams one second later with a time of 14:19. County Council Meets with Merriwether

MERRIWETHER – The Edgefield County Council held their "listening tour" in Merriwether Tuesday night at Old McDonald Fish Camp with about a dozen residents attending. Four of the five county council members were present with Mr. Dorn being absent. Chairman Dean Campbell opened the meeting thanking Jerry Bass for making the venue available and stated that there was no set agenda. Vice-chair Genia Blackwell went over several of the capital improvements that are underway in the Merriwether District including several road pavings and the planned sewer line.

Johnston Man Airlifted from Crash after Near Miss with School Bus

JOHNSTON – A Johnston man was flown to the MCG Trauma Center following a near miss head on collision with a bus loaded with children on Long Cane Road around 3 pm Tuesday. The driver of a Z28 Camaro was westbound on Long Cane Road when he drifted into the eastbound lane coming up a hill and swerved to avoid colliding with a school bus and lost control of the car.

Woman Reports $34,000 in Jewelry Stolen

BETTIS ACADEMY – A Brightharp Road woman reported an estimated $34,000 in jewelry stolen from her jewelry box on Monday. The woman told the Sheriff's deputy that there was no forced entry into the home and that the jewelry went missing sometime between March 13 and March 16.

SPORTS – The Strom Thurmond Rebels improved to 5-1 on the season and 3-0 in region play by defeating Eau Claire in both games of the double header Tuesday night.
In game one, starting pitcher Marquez Mathis went all four innings only giving up one run, striking out four batters and picking one runner off first base to get an 11-1 victory for the Rebels.

Merriwether Home Robbed of Cash and Electronics

MERRIWETHER – A West Martintown Road man called the Sheriff's Office after returning to his home and discovering around $2,000 in money and electronics stolen. The theft is believed to have taken place sometime between 1 pm and 11 pm Sunday. The homeowner told the deputy he believes the person or persons gained entry through a basement window that was unlocked.

Trail Cam Catches Thief in the Act

JOHNSTON – A Beech Island woman checking on property she owns on the 600 block of Highway 121 near Johnston on Sunday afternoon discovered someone had stolen a chest freezer off the back porch of the home. She notified the Sheriff's Office to report the theft and when the deputy arrived the woman gave the exact time the theft took place, Friday, March 9, at 3:20 pm, even though she was not at the home at the time.

County Council Comes to Merriwether Tonight

There is no agenda for the meeting and the public is invited to voice their concerns directly to the county council members. Chairman Dean Campbell, Vice-Chair Genia Blackwell, and Councilman Rodney Ashcraft have confirmed to attend the meeting. Councilman Willie Bright is also expected to attend.

Saturday Night Fire Destroys 2-Story Home

MERRIWETHER – A house fire on Five Notch Road blocked all traffic most of the night and Merriwether, Belvedere and North Augusta firefighters doused the blaze. The call came to the Edgefield County 911 Dispatch just before 9 pm from a neighbor stating the house next door was fully engulfed in flames. Merriwether Fire Department arrived within minutes and began trying to bring the fire under control. Edgefield County Deputies blocked traffic from Murrah Road to the west and Walnut Lane to the east.

Boland Wins Shamrock Run for 2nd Straight Year

EDGEFIELD – The Town of Edgefield Square was a sea of green on Saturday with the 6th Annual Shamrock Run being held along with a number of other activities. The 2.4 mile run/walk always attracts hundreds to Edgefield and was held in honor of the ever popular Public Information Officer for the School District Sandra Friar who passed away last year. Robert Boland, a student at Strom Thurmond, won the race again this year with a finishing time of 13:31, just 6 seconds off of his 13:25 finishing time last year.

House Votes No to LGF Increase with Surplus Funds: Counties Face Funding at 1996 Levels

COLUMBIA – The South Carolina House of Representative passed their version of the State's 2012-2013 budget without an increase in the Aid to Subdivisions, commonly referred to as the Local Government Fund (LGF). The funding has been cut every year for years and is at the level of the late 1990's, causing counties to face taking drastic measures to keep their government functions running. Edgefield County Administrator Lynn Strom said the funding received accounts for roughly 10% of the county's total budget.

Cyclist Hit by Truck in Critical Condition

JOHNSTON – A Johnston woman riding a bicycle was flown to MCG in critical condition after being struck by a Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck Thursday afternoon on Calhoun Street. The woman was thrown across the street and landed about 40 feet from the point of impact. She was suffering from severe head trauma and had abrasions on her head, legs and arms. A call for a helicopter went out immediately from the scene by Inv. Lamaz Robinson.

Elderly Woman Airlifted after Crash

MERRIWETHER – The Merriwether Fire Department, Extraction Truck, and EMS were called to a single vehicle crash Monday morning with a report the elderly driver was trapped inside a Chevrolet Blazer after it flipped several times. The crash took place just before 7 am on Sweetwater Road when the woman left the right-hand side of the roadway and struck a culvert, causing the SUV to flip end over end a number of times.

MERRIWETHER – A Merriwether man has made his way into Monday's release of the Aiken County Sheriff's Office Most Wanted list. Randall Merrill Scheffler, 54, with a last known address of 1511 Stevens Creek Drive, is wanted for felony check fraud. Scheffler is a white male standing 5' 8" and weighs approximately 240 with blonde hair and brown eyes. A second Merriwether man is also wanted on an unrelated charge. MERRIWETHER – Patrick McMillan, host of the ETV nature program Expeditions, will guide a hike in the Stevens Creek Heritage Preserve. McMillan will take us on a one and one-half mile walk and identify and discuss the many rare plants found in the Preserve. Fifteen rare plant species are found on this Stevens Creek bluff, including the Florida or Miccosukee gooseberry. The preserve is also home to Webster's salamander, an endangered species in South Carolina.

Crash Sends One to MCG Saturday Morning

MERRIWETHER – A two vehicle collision Saturday morning sent one driver to MCG for treatment of injuries after the Chevrolet Aveo LS she was driving rolled nearly twice before coming to rest on its roof. The driver of a Toyota Tundra was uninjured in the 10:30 am crash. Edgefield County EMS and Merriwether Firefighters were able to extract the driver from the car quickly and immobilize her for transport by ambulance.

Strom Takes the Helm of County Government as New Administrator

Administrator Lynn Strom was still getting her office in order on Thursday while preparing for the County Council meeting later in the day and trying to finalize a draft budget. "It's challenging, and I like that," Strom said. The transition to the new job went smoothly for her after serving as the assistant administrator under Administrator Roger LeDuc since July of last year.

County Official Injured in Three Car Collision

EDGEFIELD – Newly appointed Tax Assessor Mike Reed was transported by ambulance to the Edgefield County Hospital after a chain reaction three car collision on Augusta Road Thursday afternoon. According to Edgefield Police, Reed was able to stop before hitting a van that was stopped to allow another driver to turn when Reed was struck from behind by a third driver who could not stop in time.

Northside Man Charged With Animal Cruelty

NORTHSIDE – A 63-year-old White Dansby Road man was arrested for animal cruelty after calling the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office Tuesday around 1 pm reporting he needed help getting an "old trap" off of his dogs foot. The man told deputies the trap had been on the dog for three weeks prior to calling. When deputies arrived what they found was much worse and Orion Gilchrist was taken into custody.

The proposal known as the PEACH Project (Partnership for Educational Achievement in Centers and Homes) was one of only thirty-one applicants nationally to receive a federal ERF grant totaling over $3.9 million dollars.

Animal Control Truck Hit by Driver, Deputy and Driver Uninjured

WESTSIDE – The Edgefield County Sheriff's Animal Control Deputy was on the 3100 block of Martintown Road after finding a cow in the roadway when her patrol truck was struck by an eastbound Buick Regal. The deputy was out of the truck, which was parked in the roadway with blue lights and strobes activated, when the other driver clipped the passenger side rear corner sending the Buick spinning down the roadway.

TRENTON – Dusty Pearson, from Trenton, is an avid outdoorsman to say the least but absolutely crazy about all-things duck hunting especially calling. He got "the fever" last duck season (2010-2011) piddling with Cheatham's boys, Alex and Will, on several hunts. He saved his money and bought a couple calls last February. Uncooperative Tanker Truck Driver Arrested After Speeding

EDGEFIELD – The driver of a Tractor-trailer truck hauling gasoline was spotted driving northbound on Sweetwater Road Sunday morning as a Sheriff's Deputy was sitting at the stop sign on Rainsford Road. The deputy began to follow the truck and "paced" his speed at between 65 and 70 mph on a 50 mph the road.

Copper Thieves Strike Third Cell Tower

EDGEFIELD – Former Chief Magistrate Davis Parkman has announced his intention to run for Edgefield County Sheriff to Edgefield Daily during a brief interview on the Edgefield Town Square. "I have not chosen a party yet," Parkman said, "but I do plan to run." Mr. Parkman stated that he has nothing negative to say about Sheriff Adell Dobey and plans to run a "clean and positive campaign." Having served 17 years on the Johnston Town Council, 18 years as Magistrate, 16 of those as Chief Magistrate, Parkman said he wants to continue to serve the people of Edgefield County.

County Tackles Road Safety Issues at CTC Meeting Thursday

EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield County Transportation Committee (CTC) met Thursday afternoon with a full agenda of current and future county road improvement projects. The first item was current resurfacing projects, mainly in the Merriwether area, including repaving roads on Plantation Point, Stonewood, Millcreek, and Birch Point subdivisions. The $622,000 project is expected to be completed in the coming weeks. County Administrator Roger LeDuc presented the CTC with a total of five items on roads needing immediate attention.

Driver Downs Power Pole, Flees Scene Causing Road Closure

EDGEFIELD – An unknown driver of a white late 90's Toyota pickup truck shut down all traffic on the 600 block of Buncombe Street Thursday afternoon after striking a power pole off the southbound lane bringing support lines down across the roadway around 5 pm. After striking the pole, knocking it down and cutting it in half, the driver fled the scene towards Meeting Street to make his escape. All traffic was detoured around the area for well over two hours.

Millcreek Resident Reports Second Mass Killing of Chickens by Dogs in Neighborhood

MERRIWETHER – For the second time in two weeks a Millcreek resident has called the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office to report neighborhood dogs  breaking into chicken fencing and killing the livestock. In the first case the owner of the dogs were identified and she is facing a court date later this month. The latest claim came on Wednesday when another owner reported 29 specialty chickens killed by three dogs, which were still on the property when Deputies arrived on the scene.
