Handicapped Merriwether Man Found Beaten, Unresponsive in Own Home

MERRIWETHER – A handicapped Currytown Road man was found bloodied, unconscious and unresponsive lying face-down in a pool of blood Sunday morning by a woman arriving to take him to church. The woman arrived and knocked on the door but got no response and entered the home and saw blood in a number of rooms before finding the man and rushed to his aid and called 911.

Douglas Guidance Counselor Arrested for Drug Paraphernalia

TRENTON – A Douglas Elementary Guidance Counselor was arrested for drug paraphernalia following a traffic stop by a Richmond County Sheriff's Deputy on 15th Street in Augusta on March 18, according to charging papers obtained by Edgefield Daily. Edgefield County School Superintendent Greg Anderson confirmed the arrest and stated Kathryn Lynn Cross is currently on paid leave.

Libertarian Files for Probate Judge

EDGEFIELD – With less than an hour to go before the books were to close on filing for elective office, Attorney Kevin Duane Beck threw his hat in the ring as the third candidate for Probate Judge Sunday morning. Beck filed as a Libertarian, skipping over the usual Republican or Democrat party label. "I identify as an Independent," Beck said, and more closely affiliates with the Libertarian Party.

BMW Announces $1 Billion Expansion Creating 800 New Jobs

COLUMBIA – BMW announced Friday that the company will expand its plant in Spartanburg County with a $1 billion investment, which is expected to create 800 new jobs. The expansion includes the addition of a fifth vehicle platform at the plant – the X7 – and it will increase production capacity from 350,000 units to 450,000 units annually, making the Spartanburg facility the highest-capacity plant in the BMW global system by the end of 2016.

MERRIWETHER – An Edgefield County Sheriff's Investigator looking into two recent burglaries in Merriwether located a suspect at a remote trailer off Woodlawn Road Tuesday night. After extended talks with the suspect yielded no results, the suspect entered the home and refused to come out or let deputies in, in spite of pleas from the young man's father.

Ashcraft Makes it Official

EDGEFIELD – Edgefield County Council Dist. 2 Councilman Rodney Ashcraft has made his re-election bid official by filing his paperwork Tuesday afternoon. Ashcraft was first elected in 2008, defeating a six-year incumbent, and defended the seat from another challenger in 2010. He is serving his third term and will be seeking a fourth this November.

Aiken Woman Arrested in Stolen Car

TRENTON – An Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputy was dispatched to check out a suspicious vehicle on Windy Ridge and Nicholson Roads. After patrolling the area the deputy located a silver Chrysler van on Windy Ridge Road that was stuck in the ditch. The woman driver told the deputy she got stuck while trying to turn around.

MERRIWETHER – Another Merriwether home was burglarized on Monday with the person or persons responsible making off with guns, cash and jewelry. When the owner returned to the family's Martintown Road home he found the front door kicked off the hinges and immediately called the Sheriff's Office and waited outside.

1% Sales Tax Committee Releases Final List

EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield County 1% Sales Tax Committee finalized their suggested list of projects to be included in a possible 1 cent sales tax if passed by voters in November. The tax, spearheaded by Edgefield County Council Dean Campbell last summer, has grown less popular with each list released during the process. The final list is very similar to the previous, with only minor modifications.

Philippi Baptist Church Celebrates 200 Years of Service

JOHNSTON – On February 23, 2014, Philippi Baptist Church of Johnston celebrated 200 years since the church was organized to serve a rural area of the Johnston community. The Bicentennial Celebration began with the regular Sunday Morning Worship Services by Philippi Baptist Church’s Pastor, Rev. Josh McClendon. The church was filled with an estimated 300 persons in attendance. Following the morning service, dinner was served in the church fellowship hall to all those who were present.

Debris Still an Issue, County Offers Advice on Disposal

COUNTY – Almost all of the debris from the February ice storm has been removed from state roads, however; many county roads are still in need of attention. The County had a certified FEMA contractor come in and give an estimate on removal of debris from county roads at a cost of nearly $3.7 million. In order to receive the FEMA funds, the county would have to cough up nearly $1 million it does not have and the funds have not even been offered at this time.

Driver, Passengers Flee after Running Checkpoint

TRENTON – Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputies and a Highway Patrolman were conducting a safety checkpoint at the intersection of Wise and Church Streets in Trenton just before midnight Saturday when a black Lincoln approached the checkpoint. Rather than stop, the driver ignored the order to stop and took off while the occupants were throwing beer cans out of the window.

EDGEFIELD – By the looks of the attendance, plenty of folks in Edgefield County were excited to see the start of a new Dixie Youth Baseball season. For the first time in several years the weather was perfect, allowing for all scheduled games to be played. With family and friends cheering them on, each team was introduced during the opening ceremonies, which marks the official kick off of the 2014 season.

Sheriff Seizes Horses During Saturday Morning Raid

TRENTON – The Edgefield County Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant at the High View Horse Farm on 545 Van Road Saturday morning following a three month investigation of cruelty to animals. The investigation, which got underway in January, found 77 malnourished Arabian and Arabian mixed horses at the farm. A subsequent visit on March 11 found the same horses still at the location.

7 Students Injured in Bus Crash

COUNTY LINE – Seven students escaped with minor injuries following a southbound car on Highway 25 slamming into the side of the bus, also injuring the driver and the passenger of the car around 6:30 Friday morning. The Edgefield School District confirmed a total of 25 Merriwether Elementary students were on the bus at the time of the crash. The injured students and the occupants of the car were transported to MCG for treatment.

MERRIWETHER – An 89-year-old Merriwether man called the Sheriff's Office after going for a walk down his street for exercise when two dogs from a neighbor's yard charged him, one of them biting him and causing him to fall. the man suffered injuries from the bite and the fall.

Four Teens Arrested after Attacking Fifth at Home

COUNTY LINE – Four teens were arrested after a 19-year-old teen was attacked in his front yard after apparently being lured out of the house by the two females. The mother of the teen told Sheriff's Deputies that she heard a knock on the door and it was two teenage girls wanting to talk to her son. When he went outside, the two females and two males began hitting the teen in his front yard.

North Augusta Teen Charged for Mud-bogging

MERRIWETHER – An Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputy was called to the intersection of Thurmond and Scupin Roads due to a report of teens mud-bogging on Scupin Road and a a white pickup being stuck near the intersection. When the deputy arrived ha found a 16-year-old North Augusta teen stuck in the mud about 100 yards from Thurmond Road.

Johnston Man Arrested after Stealing Columbia Woman's Car

JOHNSTON – A 23-year-old Johnston man has been arrested after his brother reported finding a strange green Honda Accord parked next door at a family member's house. When he asked his brother where the car came from he said he was in Columbia and a woman just jumped out of the car and told him to take it, which he did. As the investigation was underway, there was a lot more to the story that came out.

JOHNSTON – “How are you doing in trigonometry?” asked Steven Mattson, a guest speaker at the Strom Thurmond Career and Technology Center’s Welding Technology program. “If all you can do is lay a bead, you are a `rod burner.’ ” Mattson’s message to the STCTC welding students - “To make it in our industry you have to have the academic skills in order to advance.” Mattson explained that the new technology in welding incorporates microprocessors in the welding machines, using complex mathematical skills, reading manuals, understanding blueprints, and working well with others.

RELIGION – A few years back a friend of ours who lived in Augusta moved to Lexington. Not long after that we got an invitation to her daughter’s birthday party. It was going to be at a jump castle place, something like Monkey Joes. So my wife, who is beautiful but directional challenged, asked me to find the place and plug it into her Garmin. I Googled the name of the place, found an old website and I entered the addresses into the GPS. She left for the party a little late, but an hour later she called me crying.

The End of an Era: Sawyer Retires from STH

SPORTS – Strom Thurmond Head Football Coach Lee Sawyer announced his retirement today from the game of football. Coach Sawyer has been the head football coach at Strom Thurmond since 2004 and is the winningest coach in Strom Thurmond football history. Coach Sawyer coached 131 games and posted an overall record of 107-24 (.817%).  He won the 3A State Title in 2005, giving the Rebels their 2nd state championship and bringing home the gold for the first time since 1968. Sawyer’s playoff record was 22-9 (.710%) as his teams made it to at least the 3rd round of the playoffs in eight of his ten years.

Over $7,500 in Guns, Jewelry, Cash Stolen in Recent Burglaries

COUNTY – Two more burglaries have been reported, one in Merriwether and another near Johnston, with more than $7,500 in property and cash stolen over a three day period. The first was reported on Hardly Place near Johnston and was discovered when the owner came home and found a jewelry box laying on the floor in the bedroom.

Penny Tax Opposition Grows

COUNTY – According to a recent poll conducted by Edgefield Daily, opposition to the proposed penny tax is losing by a wider margin than a poll conducted in August when it was first announced. In August 71% were opposed to the tax. In the recent poll, that number had grown to 78% against.

Zion Road and Sandy Springs Drive Saturday afternoon when a Trenton man approached in a silver Lincoln Town Car. TRENTON – An Edgefield County Deputy on patrol Saturday afternoon met a motorcyclist coming through the Pecan trees on Highway 25 running over 90 mph in a 35 mph zone. The deputy turned around in an effort to make a traffic stop, but the motorcycle was not slowing down and was putting a great deal of highway between himself and the deputy.

Trenton Man Reports Theft of Pistols

The truth once held so dear has become questionable, not politically correct, and is no longer accepted as TRUTH.  The US Constitution when adopted in 1789 restricted income taxes so that it was not practicable. Then Karl Marx wrote a book explaining the principles of Communism in 1849. He spelled out 10 "planks" that would be necessary to convert a free capitalistic society into a Communist State. The second plank called for a graduated income tax.

COUNTY – Edgefield Daily’s Editor will be released early Tuesday morning and due to the short notice, preparations for returning home are underway Monday evening. Although not healed, and still in need of IV antibiotics on a daily basis, there are also issues of pain medications that will have to be worked out with the Edgefield Medical Clinic and ECH. It will still take a number of days before full reporting returns. Wandering Minds have been updated for Tuesday. Thank you all for the answered prayers.

Update on Editor’s Condition

AUGUSTA – The Editor remains at University Hospital’s Infectious Disease Unit and is resting comfortably as possible under the circumstances as he enters day eight of his hospitalization. The first five days were at the Edgefield County Hospital. The serious infection is restricted to the lower right leg, ankle and foot. Although a great deal of progress has been made, much more must be accomplished before he can be released.

Scouts hold Pinewood Derby Race in Edgefield

EDGEFIELD – The local Scouts had a Pinewood Derby Race in Edgefield Tuesday March 4, 2014 that was enjoyed by all. The Bear Den winners were: 1st place William Bush-Jackson, 2nd place Jonah Corley and 3rd place Caleb Torgesen. The Tiger Den 1st place was Kottn Dukes. They will go to the District race on Saturday March 15 to compete against other Scout Packs.

Driver in Fatal Crash Identified

WESTSIDE – The driver killed in a one vehicle crash early Sunday morning has been identified as 28-year-old Wesley D. Lawrence, of Modoc, Dep. Coroner David Burnett said Sunday morning. The crash took place around 12:20 am and emergency personnel were on the scene until 2:30 am.

First Fatality in 445 Days Reported Early Sunday Morning

Five Arrested at Gambling House

JOHNSTON – The Edgefield County Sheriff's Office busted an illegal video poker house on Tanglewood Drive near Johnston Thursday afternoon and took five people into custody. The bust followed an investigation launched much earlier. Also arrested at the location was 47-year-old Alexander Morgan lll, a sex offender who failed to register his being in Edgefield County for over two years. This is his third offense and faces a mandatory three to five years in prison if convicted.

Cause of Death of Man Found Dead "Pending"

MERRIWETHER – The cause of death of a man found not breathing Thursday at an Eagle Road home remains under investigation. The 34-year-old man was found not breathing around 10:45 pm by one of the tenants, he then called 911. The man was later pronounced dead on the scene by the Edgefield County Corner's Office. According to an incident report released Friday, the man did not live at the home and was brought there by one of the roommates around 3 am.
