Edgefield Police locate suspect in Fairway Food Store burglary

EDGEFIELD – A week after being called a burglary at the Fairway Food Center on October 19, Edgefield Police say they have identified the culprit, a 14-year-old boy who lives near the store. Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter said there have been no formal charges made at this time; although they are positive they have the right suspect.

Yon Awarded Scholarship at State Fair

Observant friends help nab suspected thief red-handed

TRENTON – A Trenton man was alerted by two friends that a man was on a piece of property located on Edgefield Road stealing metal. They gave a description of the man and a license plate number of the truck to him and the owner then contacted police. Trenton Police Chief Deke Tanks located the suspect and the truck on Woodyard Road and followed it to the Brewer Scrap Metal facility and found the stolen items in the truck.

Storms said to be cause structure fire in Trenton

TRENTON – A late night fire in Trenton brought the Trenton and Edgefield Fire Departments to the scene was said to have been caused by lightening as strong storms moved over the area. The Trenton Fire Department got the call around 11:35 pm Wednesday night and upon arrival reported the structure was “fully involved”.

Family friend reports burglary Tuesday morning

COUNTY LINE – A man stopping by to fish at a friend’s house Tuesday around 10 am found the back door to the home kicked in and called the Sheriff’s Office. A Deputy responded to the home on the 300 block of Jacob McKie Road and confirmed the burglary and notified investigators.

COUNTY – United Way of Edgefield County Campaign Chairman Dean Campbell, left, and Campaign Vice Chairman Ken Durham receive big help in the 2010 local United Way fund-raising drive with a $62,353 check from the employees of the Savannah River Site.  Edgefield County citizens are encouraged to give to the United Way before the December 1 deadline (P.O. Box 72, Edgefield).  This year’s goal is $80,000.


Drunken men anchor in lake to avoid Deputy

TRENTON – A relaxing day on Lake Trenton on Monday evening turned ugly after two men reportedly were out in a boat making threats to a man on a dock. When a Sheriff’s Deputy arrived the two men were said to be intoxicated and refused to come to shore, but continued to use profanity and refused to cooperate with the deputy.

COLUMN – The “End of Course Data” for Edgefield County Schools was released recently and the School District championed the high passage numbers for arithmetic and English with a mediocre level of physical science. However, tucked away nicely in a small mention was the most important failure of the educational system - Strom Thurmond had only 25% passing questions on US History and the Constitution.

TRENTON – They came in different colors, sizes and breeds, lots of them—mostly dogs, but some goats, donkeys, a cat and even a jar of honey bees! The dogs ranged from a 12-week-old King Charles Cavalier Spaniel to a huge Great Pyrenees named “Tim.” They all came to be blessed by the Rev. Scotty Nead at the 10th Annual Blessing of the Animals in the Episcopal Church of the Ridge yard in Trenton Sunday.

Five injured in midday three car collision

JOHNSTON – Five people were injured in a three car crash in Johnston around 12:30 when the driver of an Oldsmobile Cutlass turned in front of a Ford Windstar van. Three of the injured were six year old and nine year old children from Johnston and their mother. Two adult women in the minivan were also transported by ambulance with minor injuries. They were from McCormick. No one was injured in the third vehicle, a Ford Explorer.

Darius Hammond and Chris Blocker have combined for a total of 126 points with Trent Miller tacking on another 42 points in kicks. Alarm call finds business targeted for burglary for second time this year

BETTIS ACADEMY – A burglary alarm call resulted in a local business being found to be targeted by thieves early Sunday morning. The call came in to Edgefield County dispatchers at 3:37 am and when deputies arrived they found the front door of the Airport Grill broken out and open. This is the second time the business has been targeted this year.

Aiken man killed in head-on collision Monday morning

AIKEN – An Aiken man was killed in a two car collision on the Highway 118 Bypass near Vaucluse Road in Aiken after the driver of an oncoming vehicle crossed the centerline and struck the 1989 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck 40-year-old Walt Eugene Cook of Aiken was a passenger. Cook was pronounced dead on the scene Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said.

SPORTS – Batesburg-Leesville crushed Keenan 42-12 to remain the only unbeaten team in the region. Eau Claire made things very interesting with a 21-18 win over Columbia.  Thurmond got their second shutout this season with a convincing 35-0 shellacking of Gilbert. The Blue Steel defense is tops in the region, only allowing 10 points per game.  Batesburg is on a seven game win streak. Keenan has an eight game losing skid.

EDGEFIELD – Convicted cocaine trafficker and School Board candidate Nathaniel Jackson is having a bad week. On Thursday night the Edgefield County Elections Commission voted unanimously to revoke his standing as a registered voter and resident of Edgefield County making him ineligible to be a candidate if upheld. On Friday he was stopped by Edgefield Police and arrested for driving under suspension 3rd offense.

Nathaniel Jackson ruled ineligible to run for School Board

EDGEFIELD – School Board candidate Nathaniel Jackson has been effectively removed from the ballot in the November 2 election for District 1 after the Edgefield County Election Commission voted unanimously that he was not a resident of Edgefield County. The 7-0 decision followed 45 minutes of deliberation after the evidence presented by Mr. Jackson and complainant Charles Kemp was reviewed. Jackson has vowed to appeal the decision.

Wanted Sex Offender

COUNTY – The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a registered sex offender who has failed report since August of this year. Charles Dozier, 33, of Bouknight Road in Johnston, is wanted for failing to register and a warrant for his arrest has been issued. He was convicted of criminal sexual conduct in the second degree with a 14-year-old girl in 2004 at the age of 27.

SPORTS – Strom Thurmond moved to 6-2 on the season with 56-18 trucking of Eau Claire.  This week the Rebels roll into Gilbert (1-7) looking to keep the momentum and swagger flowing. Short car chase lands wanted man in jail

MERRIWETHER – A Sheriff’s Deputy trying to initiate a traffic stop Wednesday evening found himself faced with an uncooperative driver. The deputy tried to stop the small blue car as it entered Stephens Road but the driver refused to pull over. Additional units were called to assist in stopping the driver who turned out to have multiple charges from Richmond County and now several in Edgefield County.

Unapproved policy “abolished” after use by Administrator

EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield County Council abolished a proposed policy for providing Ambulance service to special events at a special called meeting Tuesday afternoon. The policy was taken in by the council as “information” earlier this month, but it appeared that it was being used by County Administrator Alton Brown in spite of the policy never being approved.

COUNTY – Edgefield Daily has learned that a challenge to the residency of School Board candidate Nathaniel Jackson has been filed with the Edgefield County Elections Commission. A hearing will be held prior to the November 2 elections to determine if he is eligible to be on the ballot. Collision sends one woman to MCG

Truck found ablaze initiates investigation

WESTSIDE – A truck, suspected as possibly stolen, was found ablaze Sunday afternoon on a dirt road off Garrett Road near Georgia Road.  The truck was found fully engulfed in flames and the fire spreading to the nearby woods and brought Westside Firemen and the Forestry Department to the scene to stop a forest fire.

Theft victim turns into suspect in gun incident

COUNTY LINE – An Edgefield Road man called the Sheriff’s Office on Monday morning to report someone stealing a $375 pressure washer from a storage shed located at a rental property he owns on Rainbow Falls Road. The shed was locked and, according to him, his renter had the other key to the shed. Deputies were back at the scene several hours later with a report the owner was pointing a gun at three men at the home.

State report shows school spending up

COLUMBIA – A new report by the SC Budget and Control Board shows public school spending continues to rise in South Carolina, but the growth isn’t trickling down to teachers and students in the classroom. The state’s 85 public school districts spent over $8.8 billion dollars in 2009, an increase of $400 million from the year before. Less than half that money, just over $3.8 billion, was spent on instruction.

Saluda Middle School Teacher charged with sex crimes

SALUDA – A Saluda County Middle School teacher arrested last week has now been charged with sex crimes involving a minor. Thomas Taylor was charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor in the second degree and committing a lewd act on a minor under the age of 16. The latest charges stem from finding ”sex tapes involving boys” according to Saluda County Sheriff Jason Booth, in addition to photographs of students that were considered inappropriate.

Second cyclist injured this weekend at FATS mountain biking trails

Fire Department Open House draws best crowds yet

Children of all ages enjoyed touring the Fire Station, getting an up-close look at the various fire trucks, and even getting to use a fire hose. AIKEN – Two people lost their lives in unrelated crashes in Aiken County this weekend. 24-year-old Johnny Clarke, of North Augusta, was pronounced dead at the scene of a motorcycle crash on Duncan Rd. at 11:30 Friday night. Benjamin L. Young, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene of a single vehicle crash on Interstate 20 near mile marker 25 at 4:05 Saturday afternoon.

The man reportedly had broken his collar bone after taking a fall from his mountain bike. Suspected kidnapper in custody after manhunt

Two students charged after fight

JOHNSTON – Two Strom Thurmond students are facing charges after a fight broke out Tuesday afternoon in one of the hallways. Antonio Jameson (AJ) Nathaniel, 17, and a 16-year-old classmate were both charged following the fight that saw Nathaniel transported to University Hospital from treatment of injuries.

MERRIWETHER – Two more Merriwether homes have been targeted for burglaries this week. On Monday morning a neighbor called to report the home next door had been broken into. When the deputy arrived he found the back door had the glass panels broken on the floor and the door was open.

Merriwether Fire Department to hold Open House this Saturday

MERRIWETHER – The Merriwether Fire Department will be holding their annual Open House and Station Tour this coming Saturday at the main station on Martintown Road. There will be exhibitions presented, a tour of the facilities, fire safety pamphlets, and a free lunch will be served. Fire Chief Joey Smith encouraged residents to bring their children to the event where fire safety will also be presented aimed at the young. The event will take place between 9 am and 1 pm and is free to the public.

COUNTYLINE – A woman called the Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday to report her Jacob McKie Road home had been broken into and several items were stolen. The woman said she left the home around 8:30 in the morning and returned around 2 in the afternoon to discover the burglary.

County lowers tax rate, School District increases levy

Clark County charges three from Murphy Village with Burglary

ATHENS GA – Three Edgefield County residents from Murphy Village have been arrested after a suspicious neighbor reported seeing the men distracting an elderly neighbor while one of the men entered the home allegedly to commit a burglary. After deputies arrived they found one of the three men inside the woman’s home wearing “latex gloves” according to an official release.

EDGEFIELD - PSA – Please join us for a motorcycle benefit ride for Candace Cordell and her family. On May. 7th, 2010, Candace was severely injured in a car accident on her way home, leaving her with a serious spinal and brain injury. Candace has been through months of rehabilitation and her family has had to modify their home to aid in her recovery. Although Candace has made miraculous steps towards regaining normal function, she still has a long road ahead of her.

Weekend shooting incident reported in Johnston

JOHNSTON – Another shooting incident has been reported over the weekend, this time in the Johnston area. Three women leaving a cookout late Saturday night called to report shots being fired at the car they were in as they drove along Holmes Pond Road. One of the bullets struck the car and busted out one of the windows in the car. None of the women were injured.

North Augusta man charged for attempted murder in recent shooting

EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man they claim is responsible for the shooting of a Belvedere woman at a home on Square Circle Ranch Road last Saturday morning. Stetson Watson Mims, 19, of Conifer Circle in North Augusta, was taken into custody Friday morning and is facing multiple felony charges including attempted murder.

Sheriff’s employees raise $1,300 for injured teen

EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office presented Sheriff’s Sgt. Robert Velasco, his wife Tera, and their daughter Candace with a check for $1,300 after a series of fundraisers undertaken by the employees of the Sheriff’s Office. It has been five months since Candace was near death after a violent crash on May 8. The fundraisers were held to help the family offset the enormous medical bills that continue to mount.
