EDGEFIELD – An Edgefield man was shot in
the face Sunday night at his apartment just after 10 pm and called 911
sending Edgefield Police and Sheriff's Deputies racing to the scene at
the home converted to apartments on the 400 block of Jeter Street.
Police began setting up a perimeter in an effort to capture the shooter
believed to be fleeing the scene on foot with two other accomplices.

PM. The Police Department and Johnston Development Board are giving out
Halloween bags to some of the Johnston Elementary school children at
the school. The Town of Edgefield did not respond to request of their
observing Trick or Treaters.

SPORTS – Regular season mission
accomplished. The record scoring Rowdy Rebels capped off a perfect 10-0
regular season with a rout of Batesburg Leesville in the Panther Pit,
becoming only the eighth team in Thurmond history to finish a regular
season without a loss. Although seven prior teams finished the regular
season unbeaten, none of them averaged 47 points per game like the 2011
Rebels.

Rebels will get a week off as the #2 seed in the Upper State play-offs
for the run to their hopes of another State Title. The Rebels will play
the winner of the #7 Keenan match-up against #10 Broome on Nov. 4. The

Dobey has issued a warning of fraudulent phone solicitations using the
SC Sheriff's Association as a way to get citizens to send them money.
Sheriff Dobey said, "The South Carolina Sheriff's Association never
uses telemarketing to raise funds," and warns citizens who get the
calls to hang up immediately.

from Edgefield County, won her third consecutive 3A Individual State
Title at Quail Creek Golf Course in Conway S.C. on October
24th&25th. Talbert finished the two day tournament with a 1 over
par score of 145 after shooting 72 and 73. Two years ago she set the
course record by firing a four under par 68 and then broke her own
record last year with a 67, finishing at -6 for the two day tournament
in 2010.

the field for the first time and marched 90 yards, scoring on a 7 yard

children across the country will be out trick-or-treating, and with
that comes increased risk of accidents, especially those involving
burns. Halloween is the fifth highest day of the year for candle fires

EDGEFIELD – Felony warrants were issued
and served on Toebert Robinson, 21, for the attempted carjacking
Tuesday at the Edgefield CVS Pharmacy and the ensuing high speed chase.
Though Robinson is facing a slew of charges stemming from the incident,
only two are felonies. Edgefield County Sheriff's Chief Investigator
Randy Doran said Wednesday that Robinson is being held on a total of
$30,000 in bonds.

Pharmacy in Apple Square just before 2 pm was accosted by a strange man
when she unlocked her SUV and the man exited his car and jumped inside
of hers. The woman began screaming and when other shoppers heard her
pleas for help they came to her aid and the man jumped out of the SUV
and got into his car and sped away. One witness was following behind
while on the phone with 911 dispatchers giving them updates on his

offensively, averaging 46 points per game and have scored 416 total
points thus far. The most points scored in a season by a Strom Thurmond
team is 510 by the 1996 squad that averaged 36 points per game.

Showdown will be held Wednesday Night 5:30 at Strom Thurmond High
School when the Merriweather Mustangs take on the JET Eagles in the
season finale battle. The Mustangs are 4-3 overall with two of those
losses coming in overtime. They will be led by head coach Damein
Bowman.
The Eagles are 6-1 after suffering their first defeat of the season
last week to Batesburg. Vick Love will be leading the Eagles as

recently as scrap metal prices continue to climb. That was the case
this weekend after a Williams Drive property owner called to report

into a shed at his old home place, walking distance from his current

JOHNSTON
– A 25-year-old Johnston man is dead following a single car crash at
the intersection of Highway 121 and Boughknight Road Saturday morning.
The first emergency personnel on the scene reported debris was
scattered all around the scene for about 35 yards. An AirMed helicopter
was
called to the scene and then turned back when EMS realized the driver
was deceased despite their efforts to save him.

in eight
years the Strom Thurmond Rebels are regions champs. It was a
Senior Night to remember as the state’s #2 ranked Rebels came out
firing on all cylinders and blew Gilbert away in record fashion scoring
the most points in school history. Not only did the offense light
it up but the defense blanketed Gilbert. Of the Indian’s 12
possessions the Blue Steel defense forced seven 3 and outs and two

AIKEN – A Johnston woman was killed in a
two car crash on Highway 19 near the Edgefield and Aiken County line
Friday morning. 70 year old Dora Jones of Johnston was pronounced dead
at the scene from injuries received in the collision, Aiken County
Coroner Tim Carlton said. The collision took place at 11:29 am after
another vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign at Springfield Church Rd,
striking Jones' Chevy Blazer on the driver's side, causing it to roll
several times.

TRENTON – Firefighters from
Three
departments were called to a working structure fire at the Trenton
B-B-Q on Highway 25 Friday around 2:15 pm. Trenton and Edgefield trucks
arrived first shutting down all traffic on the busy highway for over an
hour. The County Line Fire Department also responded as firefighters
tried
to bring the fire under control. The fire broke out in the large
smoker, the cook said. "When I opened it up there was fire everywhere,"
he said, adding that it had already spread up the vent pipe overhead.

I was in Edgefield today for a meeting and the Trenton and Edgefield
Fire Departments were dispatched to a structure fire at Trenton BBQ.
The meeting had ended so I decided to ride in with them to check out
the situation. It was my first hand look at seeing how the other county
departments operate that early into a fire. Kudos' go out to all three
depts. (Trenton, Edgefield and County Line) sent to the fire for their
ability to tame the beast.

COUNTY LINE – A Square Circle Ranch Road
man called the Sheriff's Office Wednesday afternoon after being advised
by a friend a tractor on his property was missing around 4 pm. The
owner was out of town and met with deputies about two hours later.
During the initial investigation a witness was found who said he
unknowingly saw the men steal the tractor.

Deputies and Highway Patrol were called to a one car crash on
Martintown Road Tuesday around 3:30 pm. When they arrived a few minutes
later they found the car, but no driver. Due to obvious evidence of the
driver hitting his head very hard in the crash, dispatch was asked to
notify the hospitals in case he was to be dropped off for treatment of

Saluda and
Aiken business owner Harvey Smith Holmes Sr., well-known figure in the
Johnston community, died Friday, Oct. 7, 2011. He was 88. Although Mr.
Holmes lived just over the line in Saluda County, he was a native of
Edgefield County and had been an active businessman and community
member in both counties for years. His funeral was held Monday, Oct.
10, at 11 a.m. at Saluda Baptist Church and he is buried in Bethlehem
Methodist Church Cemetery in Johnston.

Johnston
bar ended with a shooting incident and led to another in Edgefield
early Sunday morning. 911 Dispatchers received the first call about the
altercation at John's Club just after 2 am. Johnston Police arrived on
the scene and while there shots were fired. As they were dealing with
that incident, someone called just after 3 am Sunday to report that two
black males were seen exiting a white car and firing a number of shots
from a pistol around a home and then jumped into a white car driven by
a female and fled the scene in Edgefield.

wanted man turned around to follow a vehicle they suspected to be
driven by their man on Aiken Avenue in Johnston Friday night just
before 10 pm. The driver of the car sped off at a high rate of speed
and tried to make a sharp turn on to Johnson Street where he slammed
into two parked cars and ran from the scene. After Johnston Police

an hour to convict Rev. James Robert "JR" Hooper of assault and battery
of a high and aggravated nature that stemmed from an attempted rape of
a woman in March
of 2007. The victim, who rented a home from Hooper, told police at the

died following a fatal single car crash on Weeks Road Monday night.
Aiken County Coroner said Darius Hightower of Williston died from

Some newcomers, may not be aware of the aversion to spaying and

20 near mile marker 36 has claimed the life of 88 year old Nell Barr of
West Columbia SC. The single vehicle crash occurred around 2:26
Thursday afternoon. Four others were injured in the crash, Aiken County
Coroner Tim Carlton said, after a tire bow-out as the family was
traveling back to Columbia after attending a funeral for a relative in
Aiken.

night's county council meeting was released on Thursday and it appears
the county went a long way to get back to where they started. The

our October 4 meeting, we had a public hearing to receive and consider
public comments on this map before we moved forward. After the public
input session, we made some additional modifications to the district

meeting on October 25.

MERRIWETHER – The body of a
56-year-old
Harlem man was recovered from Stevens Creek Wednesday after the man was
reported missing since Thursday of last week. Sheriff's Deputies were
called to the boat landing on Woodlawn Road Tuesday night after fellow
fishermen reported the man's truck having been parked at the landing
for several days with the window's down and the keys in the ignition.
His brother, a Merriwether resident, told deputies his brother would
often camp nearby and fish for days.

39 near Salley SC has claimed the life of a 20 year old Salley woman at

Edgefield Police Officer reported hearing what sounded like a car
crashing in the area of Highland Avenue just before 11 pm on Sunday.
After a second officer arrived they saw a gray Lexus driving backwards
on Gray Street that crashed into the ditch. As the officer's
approached, the driver ran into the nearby woods with the officer's
giving chase.

Storage arrived Monday morning to discover that at least a dozen
storage units had been burglarized sometime over the weekend. After a
deputy arrived an investigator was dispatched to process the scene.
Video surveillance revealed a white van entering the gated area matched
that of a van recorded in other burglaries in August.

TRENTON – The Edgefield County Sheriff's
Office was notified by a Trenton woman Friday that she was receiving
phone calls at home and work from a person claiming to represent a
fictitious law firm representing a "Cash Corp." and was hired to settle
a $480 debt collection for the company. The man told the woman if she
did not pay the debt she would be arrested. Lucky for her she did not
comply and notified the Sheriff's Office. It was all a scam.

Edgefield County
Courthouse has been dealing with ongoing plumbing issues that began to
ratchet up this week. "Brown water" was reported spilling out on
Wednesday, by Thursday every bathroom in the courthouse was out of
service, and on Friday the basement of the courthouse had to be
evacuated as raw sewage covered the floor of the former Voter
Registration Office and flowed out into the hallway next to the Tax
Assessor's Office. All the while a very important trial is expected to
get underway on Monday.
