MERRIWETHER – County Council Vice-Chair Genia Blackwell (Merriwether-R) held her EMA and Emergency Preparedness meeting Thursday night at the Sweetwater Baptist Church with well over 40 people attending to hear from nine experts covering departments that will be involved in serving the public in the event of another ice storm or other emergency situations be they weather related or man-made. During her opening Mrs. Blackwell said the main question everyone should ask is, "are you prepared if it happens again?"

One in Custody in Woodlawn Road Burglary, Second Expected to Turn Self In Friday

MERRIWETHER – One man is in custody and a second is expected to turn himself in to the Edgefield County Detention Center sometime Friday investigators said Thursday night. Eddie Shaw Sherlock was one of the two men identified after Edgefield Daily ran their pictures and the owner of the business offered a $500 reward to the person providing their identities.

Trick or Treating Hours for Edgefield, Johnston

EDGEFIELD / JOHNSTON – Halloween is Friday, October 31, and the towns of Edgefield and Johnston will observe the holiday with trick or treaters allowed from 6 pm until 8:30 pm Friday. In Edgefield, Mayor Ken Durham will be on the Town Square handing out candy on behalf of the town from 6 pm until 7:30 pm. All children should be accompanied by an adult and should carry a flashlight and/or wear reflective costumes.

Possible Burglary Suspects Identified

MERRIWETHER – The two suspects sought in an attempted burglary on Woodlawn Road have been identified, according to the investigator in the case. Their identities have not been released and warrants for their arrests are being sought. It is unknown if a tipster provided the identifications and are eligible for the reward. EDGEFIELD – Edgefield Police served a search warrant at an apartment on W.A. Reel Drive last week and recovered a long list of illegal items including drugs, a sawed-off shotgun, counterfeit money, and much more. Quayshaun Tyree Patterson, 21, of 180 W. A. Reel Drive Apt. E5 was taken into custody on the scene. One other person at the home was given a ticket for simple possession of marijuana and released.

Local Kicker Receives National Attention

MERRIWETHER – Michael Almond is a senior at Westminster Schools of Augusta. He previously attended Merriwether elementary and Merriwether middle school. Since the age of 4 he has been a soccer player and began kicking footballs in 7th grade at Merriwether Middle School. Last year he was captain of Westminster’s State Championship soccer team.

Safety Road Check Nets Arrest of Possible Drug Dealer with Cocaine, Hash and Marijuana

EDGEFIELD – Edgefield Police conducting a Safety Checkpoint early Tuesday morning at the intersection of Brooks Street and Buncombe Street spotted a dark colored vehicle approaching from the Town Square. When officers approached the car they reported a strong odor of marijuana coming from the car and asked if there were any drugs in the car, to which the driver, Matthew Adams Edwards, 19, of Pine Ridge Road denied.

Four Charged Trying to Sell Stolen Van at Trenton Scrap Yard

TRENTON – Four Johnston men ranging in age between 17 and 21 have been arrested and charged with possession of a stolen vehicle at Brewers Scrap Metal Yard on Wooodyard Road Monday afternoon after an Aiken man reported to workers that the Chevy van they were trying to sell was stolen. The workers stalled the four men until Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputies could arrive and investigate the claim.

EDGEFIELD – I got in a little mess with the military police this week at Fort Gordon. I love Craig’s List and I often buy from soldiers who are moving. Most of my gym at home has come from these great guys. I have a rowing machine that came off a nuclear submarine, a weight set that did two tours in Iraq, and several other items as well. I enjoy meeting the young men, talking with them and getting a good deal. This past week I was given directions by a young solider to come to Gate 5 at Fort Gordon as he lived right inside the gate. I did as he instructed.  But I did not have a visitor pass and I could not enter the base by Gate 5.

MERRIWETHER – A Merriwether man called the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office Friday morning to report someone had tampered with the door to his shop and items under the shed had been moved. When he went to check a trail cam he has in front of his shop he found photos of two white males under the shed of his shop looking around and tampering with items. An investigator arrived and retrieved the photos and has released them seeking the public's help in identifying the suspects.

EDGEFIELD – Services offered by the Edgefield County Senior Citizens Council may be one of Edgefield’s “best kept secrets”—not intentionally, but because people fail to spread the word and elderly people, especially, fail to ask about services available to them. The Senior Citizens Council began in 1975 in the basement of the Plantation House on the Town Square when citizens would meet once a month and bring a covered dish and discuss plans, said Roberta Pugh, who began working at the Senior Center in 1979 and is now retired.

Man Arrested off Woodlawn Road Identified, Was Wanted and Possible Burglary Investigation Follows

MERRIWETHER – A man arrested for trespassing after being held at gunpoint by a homeowner late Sunday night has more possible charges heading his way as the investigation continues. The suspect has been identified as 25-year-old Darin Mikel Montgomery, of Rita Avenue in North Augusta. He was originally charged with trespassing, but it was later found that he had a warrant out for his arrest on a probation violation and additional charges could be filed as the investigation of the events on Sunday continues.

Homeowner Holds Suspicious Man at Gunpoint, One Arrested

MERRIWETHER – A Merriwether woman went to check on suspicious lights behind their home and came across a man parked behind a vacant trailer on the property and when the man got out of his car she told him not to move or she would shoot him as she called 911. Moments later an Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputy arrived and took the man into custody after finding burglary tools and possible stolen items inside the car.

JOHNSTON – The Horticulture 2 class at Strom Thurmond Career & Technology Center, under the direction of Dr. Darla Steele, recently decorated the front of the career center in celebration of the fall season. Floral design, as part of her curriculum teaches the students to decorate using not only flowers but many other aspects of agriculture, including corn stalks, straw bales, pumpkins and gourds. She also teaches floral design with floriculture crops in arrangements and cut flowers.

COUNTY – The South Carolina Department of Education released district and individual school’s ESEA letter grades last week. ESEA stands for the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and is a federal program for accountability within the public education system. The grading system was put in place three years ago and 2012 saw the first grades published. Suspect in Car Chase Identified

MERRIWETHER – The driver and passenger of a red Suzuki that led North Augusta police on a chase that ended on Macedonia Road in Edgefield County have been identified. The driver, 43-year-old Gregory Patrick Moody, of Macedonia Road, was taken into custody by North Augusta police at his home where he ended the chase Thursday night.

Report of Suspicious Persons Leads to Arrest at Boat Landing

Rash of Car Break-Ins Reported: Officer's Patrol Weapon, Debit Cards, Credit Cards, Prescription Meds and ID's Stolen

MERRIWETHER – Beginning on Tuesday and continuing Thursday, residents in and around the Murphy Village area have reported a number of car break-ins with the person or persons stealing debit cards, credit cards, personal documents, prescription drugs and even a shotgun "patrol weapon" issued to an officer that were all left in unlocked cars. The thefts appear to be taking place very late at night and into the early morning hours.

MERRIWETHER – North Augusta Police alerted the Edgefield County Sheriff's Dispatch that they were in pursuit of a wanted man out of Aiken County who was refusing to stop for them and the chase was entering Edgefield County on Highway 25 around 10:28 pm Thursday. Before an Edgefield County Deputy could arrive in the area, the chase turned off Highway 25 northbound and onto the dead end Macedonia Road.

Strom Thurmond NJROTC Cadets Take First Place in Drill Meet

JOHNSTON – An Edgefield County School District bus driver called Johnston Police to report striking a pedestrian as she made her way to Johnston Elementary for her afternoon route. Murder Investigation Continues, No Arrest Made So Far

EDGEFIELD – It has been nearly two weeks since the body of Johnny Hydrick was found on the floor of the den of his Windy Ridge home on Saturday, October 11. According to information provided in the case, Hydrick had been killed on Friday and was not discovered until the next morning. Investigators have been working leads and help from the public has been instrumental in the case, Edgefield County Chief Investigator Randy Doran said Wednesday.

Trenton House Fire Draws at Least Four Fire Departments

TRENTON – A home on Country Way was reported as being fully engulfed in flames after an Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputy responded to the report of the fire just after 3 pm Tuesday. Trenton and Edgefield Firefighters arrived on the scene minutes later and quickly called for additional fire departments to respond.

Local FFA Chapter Attends FFA Day at the SC State Fair

COLUMBIA – The Thurmond FFA Chapter attended the annual FFA Day at the SC State Fair in Columbia on Oct. 14th.  Forty-three members from the Thurmond FFA traveled to the State Fair Grounds with advisors Jeremy Brooks and Darla Steele. The students enjoyed free admission to the fair, lunch from the SC Soybean and Pork Boards, and many different exhibits showing the diversity of agriculture field.

Trick or Treating Hours for Edgefield, Johnston

EDGEFIELD / JOHNSTON – Halloween is next Friday, October 31, and the towns of Edgefield and Johnston will observe the holiday with trick or treaters allowed from 6 pm until 8:30 pm Friday. In Edgefield, Mayor Ken Durham will be on the Town Square handing out candy on behalf of the town from 6 pm until 7:30 pm. All children should be accompanied by an adult and should carry a flashlight and/or wear reflective costumes.

This is true not just for the 10 year old hooked to an IPod, but for the adult who spends each and every second of their day and weekend running around looking for the next thrill or excitement. The reality is that we do so much all the time it takes a lot to shrug off boredom and to be thrilled. We find ourselves hyper stimulated and nothing at all brings a thrill to our hearts.

Johnston Woman "Cuts" Victim over Loud Music

JOHNSTON – A 55-year-old Johnston woman got into an short argument over someone playing music too loud at an apartment at 605 Ridge Road around 1:20 am Saturday, which was turned down due to the complaint. However, a short time later the woman came back out with a knife and allegedly cut the other woman several times and then left. When the first officer arrived the 28-year-old victim met him with a bloody towel wrapped around her hand and was bleeding from at least thee deep cuts.

Merriwether Home Burglarized Within an Hour and a Half

MERRIWETHER – A Stephens Road woman called the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office after arriving back home after being gone for just over an hour and a half Saturday evening and found her front door damaged. She waited outside until deputies arrived and cleared the home and found no one inside.

The meeting will cover the hits and misses by EMA in the Merriwether area during the Ice Storm in February of this year and ways citizens can be better prepared and offer suggestions to county and local officials who will be on hand at the meeting.

SPORTS – On Saturday, October 11, 2014, Hampton Ratcliffe traveled to Columbia, SC to compete in the South Carolina High School 3A State Championship Swim meet. Hampton is a sophomore at Fox Creek High School. This is the first year the school has had a swim team for several years and Hampton was the only swimmer who qualified for the state meet.

Booth, who was in Family Court on Thursday, decided that he would express his true inner thoughts verbally while in court and was ordered removed from the courtroom after telling Judge Robert Newton, "F--- You!" He also wanted to express those same feelings to just about everyone else in the courtroom while he was at it.

SPORTS – Strom Thurmond (5-3, 2-1) remained in the region title hunt with a 24-16 win over a feisty Saluda (2-6, 0-3) squad Friday night in Saluda. The Rebels looked to be on cruise control after clicking on all cylinders, jumping ahead 24-0 midway thru the 3rd quarter, but two Saluda scores with successful two point conversions followed by a blocked punt put the game in question late in the 4th.

JOHNSTON – The Edgefield County School Board met Tuesday night, Oct. 14, addressing a number of issues, among them an elementary alternative classroom which was approved by the Board. One Board member called the new alternative classroom “long overdue.” During the public comments portion of the meeting, a potential program that would utilize a certified therapy dog to promote reading with children was presented by Laura Arthur, a teacher at Merriwether Middle School.

Pit Bull Attacks Man, Takes Him to The Ground - Owner Blames Victim

JOHNSTON – A Johnston man living on the 300 block of Highway 121 was standing in his yard when he noticed his neighbor's brown Pit Bull had gotten out of the fenced area next door and was running around in his yard. All of a sudden the Pit Bull began circling him and out of fear tried to run back inside his house. The Pit Bull closed in quickly and jumped up and bit the man's arm causing him to fall to the ground and also leading to a cut on his other arm. He was able to escape the attack and get inside to call 911.

Suspicious Wrecker Driver Spotted Again

EDGEFIELD – A worker at Urban Outfitters just outside of Trenton on Highway 25 called the Sheriff's Office after security officers informed her a wrecker was attempting to load her car out of the parking lot Tuesday morning. When security officers approached the wrecker driver, described only as a black male, he got in the wrecker and drove away. An investigator working the case placed a BOLO (Be On the Lookout) for the wrecker and its driver fearing the man may be stealing cars.

EDGEFIELD – An Edgefield man arrived at the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office to report discovering at least five other people using his Social Security number, one as far away as California. The 66-year-old Hispanic man told an investigator he discovered his number being used when he made reapplication to the government subsidized apartment he lives in.

Dog At Large Causes Problems with Neighbors, Charges Officer

JOHNSTON – An Addison Street man called Johnston Police to complain about a dog that was in his yard barking at him when he went outside and he wanted something done. When the officer arrived at the home the dog, whose breed was absent from the incident report, was in the road and began barking at the officer as he spoke to the complainant. The man told the officer which house the dog belonged to and as the officer went to get in his patrol car the dog charged him, forcing him to draw his gun, at which time the dog stopped the charge but continued to bark.

County Council Members Ashcraft, Butler Hold EMA Preparedness Meeting today

COUNTY – County Councilwoman Betty Butler and Councilman Rodney Ashcraft will both be holding EMA and Emergency Preparedness meeting in their respective Districts today. The meetings are to inform the public about emergency services during a disaster, such as the Ice Storm in February that paralyzed portions of the county for days and left many without power for over a week. Mrs. Butler's meeting will be at 4 pm at Mount Canaan Baptist Church at the Brightharp Youth Center, 2451 Edgefield Road and Mr. Ashcraft's will be held at 7 pm at the Colliers Community Center (Behind Peace Haven Baptist Church at 3181 Martintown Rd.). Murder Victim to be Laid to Rest Thursday - Tips Aid Investigation

TRENTON – Johnny Freeman Hydrick, 50, of Windy Ridge Road in Trenton, will be laid to rest on Thursday at 2 pm at Napier Funeral Home, Inc., 315 Main St., Graniteville, with internment at Aiken Memorial Park in Aiken. Very few details in Hydrick's death have been released since he was found dead at his home by his brother on Saturday morning. Investigators say they have been making progress in the case and tips from the public are helping.

Woman Robs Winn's Grocery Tuesday

NORTHSIDE – The Edgefield County Sheriff's Dispatch received a 911 call around 12:30 Tuesday from the clerk at Winn's Grocery saying she had just been robbed and the female suspect left the store in a white car heading west on Highway 378 towards McCormick. Sheriff's Deputies converged on the area from different directions in an effort to intercept the robber as she fled.

RELIGION – I got a bit of a record with US Customs. When I was in college, I tried to order (smuggle) a Cuban Cigar from Great Britain and have it shipped to my house. Well, the website guaranteed delivery or your money back. I was a young student of legal cigar smoking age at a Baptist college. My only rebellion was smoking cigars with buddies at the tops of mountains when we went hiking. Discussing theology in creation with fine tobacco seemed so sophisticated.

George Fridlender to Speak at Edgefield First Baptist this Sunday

EDGEFIELD – George Fridlender was born and raised behind the "Iron Curtain" in the former Soviet Union. His father was persecuted for his Christian faith and spent 17 years in a Siberian concentration camp before being released. George lived through a similar experience when he was arrested by the KGB and sentenced to years in prison. But, like his father, he was delivered from prison, left the oppression behind, and came to the United States.
