SRNS Employees Exceed Goal, Give over $1.02M to United Way

COUNTY- This year, Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS) employees led the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) in community giving for United Way, raising over $1.2 million, which includes the employee campaign and corporate match. To celebrate the highly successful campaign, SRNS invited the United Way agencies and special guests from the surrounding communities to a reception at the Savannah River Site (SRS) in Aiken, S.C.

Update of Aiken Traffic Fatality

AIKEN- More information has been released about the late traffic fatality that occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Aiken County.  Aiken County Coroner has identified the man that was ejected from the vehicle as 39 year old Eric A Carver of Wagener, South Carolina.

JOHNSTON- Strom Thurmond Career and Technology Center’s (STCTC) Welding Technology students fabricated a decorative fire grate for the Palmetto Shooting Complex at the NWTF’s pavilion fireplace.  “The job these students did with the fire grate is fantastic.  They are developing skills that will ensure them a great career and they are contributing to the community,” said Beth Christie, NWTF.

Two Chevy Impalas Go Missing From S&H Used Car

TRENTON- Sunday morning officers responded to a call in reference to a break in at the S&H Used Car Lot in Trenton.  When officers arrived they spoke to an employee who stated that while she was next door at the Dollar General that morning, she looked over at the car lot and noticed that two white Chevy Impalas were missing.

AIKEN- At approximately 10:12pm on Tuesday night, a car traveling down Camp Rawls Road in Aiken County was traveling at a high rate of speed .  The vehicle left the roadway, and crashed into a tree.  The passenger of the vehicle was ejected.

RELIGION- I have worked a ton of odd jobs in my life. My first was hauling hot and dirty mulch in the afternoon with my dad. We used his truck, his gas, and he helped with the work, but gave me all the money. Thanks dad! I was a short lived color blind electrician’s helper (think about it and you’ll realize why that career was doomed to fail.). I have bussed tables, washed dishes, cooked, and served in restaurants. I worked in discount fashion while in college (the color blindness was also a factor here).

City of Edgefield Ranks Number 1 On Safest Cities In South Carolina Report

EDGEFIELD-  According to the SafeWise Report, Edgefield County was ranked number 1 in the Safest City in South Carolina.  The poll determines the safest city by looking at recent FBI crime reports, and had a population that was more than 2,000.  They then compared the number of property crimes to that of violent crimes, and then determined the chances of it happening out of 1,000 people.

STCTC Cosmetology Students Provide Free Services to Public

JOHNSTON- Strom Thurmond Career and Technology students develop their cosmetology skills each year by opening and operating the Rebel Salon. “Our students went to NHC Nursing Home last week and spent a few hours doing nails and hair for the residents. The residents really enjoyed the experience but not near as much as my students,” explained Jackie Kennion, Cosmetology teacher.

Intoxicated Hit and Run

EDGEFIELD- Saturday Evening Officers were dispatched to a call in reference to a hit and run that had just occurred off Highway 25.  The victim told officers the car that hit hers was traveling towards the town of Edgefield.  The victim continued to follow the suspect advising the officers which way he was headed, until the vehicle stopped at Bi-Lo.

STCTC Health Science Students Prepare for CNA Certification

JOHNSTON- Strom Thurmond Career and Technology Health Science students prepare for the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification exam each year. “The CNA certification exam has two parts. Students must pass a written exam and a skills portion,” explained Diana Wintrow, Health Science teacher. STCTC Health Science students practice the skills demonstrated in the CNA exam in class and during their clinical experiences. “Our students practice everything from the proper way to approach a patient to bathing the patient to proper lifting techniques,” said Teresa Lilly, Health Science teacher.

Grassroots Training Coming to Aiken

Opinion: Writer Raises Concern About Religious Freedom

Dear Editor,
Two recent incidents involving religious freedom have caused me to reach my boiling point.  One involves a small Iowa town where a small wooden cutout of a soldier kneeling at a cross was put on a grave in a municipal cemetery.  Another is a preacher in Kentucky who, for 13 years has volunteered to counsel juvenile inmates.   After someone objected to him quoting the bible and how homosexuality was a sin, KY state officials told him to sign an affadavit that he would not do that again or cease his volunteer work with the state.

LIFE DOWN SOUTH- It’s getting harder to escape civilization’s flotsam and trappings. Just about everywhere I go, telltale signs of civilization exist. If I don’t see powerlines, I see contrails streaking the sky. If I don’t see contrails, I see litter, even in wild places. Plastic bottles wash into the heart of blackwater swamps. Windborne plastic grocery bags snag limbs. We do a superb job of ruining natural places. Still, several places will reward you with near-pure views of wildness if you go to them.

DHEC Press Release: Laurens County raccoon, Anderson County cat expose victims to rabies

STATE- Two people have been referred to their health care providers for consultation after being exposed to rabies. The first exposure occurred in the Gray Court area of Laurens County in association with a raccoon that tested positive for the disease. The second exposure occurred in the Williamston area of Anderson County by a cat that also tested positive for rabies, the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) reported today.

JOHNSTON- The Johnston Town Council met Monday night, with no old business on the agenda but with a number of new items to be addressed.
In the first order of business, Council approved the one bid of $3,950 from Patrick Berry for demolition of the property on Roland Avenue. Following this, Mayor Terrence Culbreath updated Council on the Town of Johnston’s Comprehensive Plan. There was no discussion.

American Red Cross Mounts Massive Relief Operation in Response to South Carolina Floods

STATE- The American Red Cross has mounted a massive relief operation to help people affected by historic flooding and rainfall in South Carolina. The Red Cross opened 30 shelters and mobilized more than 400 workers and 23 emergency response vehicles to deliver food and supplies to families in need.
