JOHNSTON – Strom Thurmond Career and Technology Center faculty members Darla Steele (left) and Jeremy Brooks have been named South Carolina Mid-State Region Outstanding Agricultural Education Teachers of the Year for 2013 by the South Carolina Association of Agricultural Educators. Darla who is in her fifth year as agricultural education instructor at the career and technology center was named the regions Outstanding Young Agriculture Teacher and Jeremy, who is in his twelfth year as an agricultural education instructor was named the regions Outstanding Agriculture Teacher.

County Schools Join United Way of Edgefield County

COUNTY – The United Way of Edgefield County and the public schools in the Edgefield County School District are joining forces again this year to benefit all. The local United Way is offering a $500 incentive grant to the Edgefield County School that raises the most money per capita for the local United Way. Last year, Johnston Elementary School won the incentive grant.

Red Cross to Hold Third Annual Roast and Toast Fundraiser

AIKEN – The American Red Cross Aiken Area Chapter will hold its third annual Red Cross Roast and Toast fundraiser on Saturday, November 9, 2013 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Big Red Barn on Chime Bell Church Road in Aiken. SPORTS – A sellout crowd got their money’s worth as this was a midseason game that lived up to all the hype and buildup. 3A #3 Strom Thurmond gave 4A #4 North Augusta all they wanted until the final seconds melted away and the highly touted Yellow Jackets narrowly escaped with a 27-20 victory.

Two Charged with Drugs at Fox Creek

MERRIWETHER – Two Fox Creek High School Students have been charged following a surprise K-9 search inside and outside of the school just after classes began Thursday morning. Edgefield County Sheriff's drug dogs, their handlers and members of the Narcotic Unit arrived and began classroom and cars in the parking lots. No drugs were found in the school according to incident reports.

One Injured in Rollover Crash

MERRIWETHER – A 24-year-old Hampton man was returning home from Clemson and lost control of his Ford F150 pickup truck on Garrett Road causing it to hit a culvert to a driveway and then began rolling a number of times before coming to rest upside down after striking a tree. By the time the first rescue personnel arrived on the scene the man had exited the truck but was unsteady on his feet. Merriwether Fire crews and EMS arrive moments later and immobilized him from transport to the trauma center.

SPORTS – Picking up where he left off at the Dixie Youth State Tournament in Clemson this past July, 12 year old Michael Feagin opened the 2013 fall baseball season Tuesday night with a 220' shot over the left field fence as Edgefield blanked Gilbert Red, 12-0. KJ Butler would start on the mound and strike out the first 3 Gilbert batters. Daniel Herlong, Kevin Ortega and Treyson Maroni would also pitch for Edgefield and allow only one Gilbert hit.

National Wild Turkey Federation Announces Large Expansion

EDGEFIELD – The National Wild Turkey Federation has long served as a leader in upland wildlife conservation and an advocate for our country’s hunters. Now, it has plans to expand its Edgefield, S.C., campus, on which it will build a facility to help better fulfill its mission. The NWTF Hunting Heritage Center will be a destination for conservation and hunting groups to plan, train and connect as they partner with the organization on its new Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt. initiative, designed to create new hunters, conserve critical wildlife habitat and open access to more public lands for outdoor recreation.

I updated my iPhone this week, I checked a box that I agreed with their policies, they could have said they will draft five bucks a day from bank account for the next 10 years and I would not have known. I just checked the box.

Heritage Jubilee on Edgefield Town Square This Weekend: Bigger and Better than Ever

EDGEFIELD – The Town of Edgefield will host the annual Heritage Jubilee this weekend in downtown Edgefield. Co-chairperson Sonny Seawright said a huge crowd is expected for the "better and bigger than ever" festival. "After trying other locations for several years, the festival is moving back downtown, with better access for everyone," he said. "The town will be blocked off for the event and we are inviting everyone to come and have a fun-filled day, beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday. There will be plenty of good food and activities, with something for everyone, especially children and history buffs."

Charges Upgraded in Handcuffed Domestic Violence Case

JOHNSTON – The victim of the brutal attack by a live-in boyfriend has seen the charges against Ryan Jeffers increase. The victim was conscious on Monday and Johnston Investigator Lamaz Robinson returned to the hospital to get the woman's side of the story. "As of today (Monday), he's been charged with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature and kidnapping," Inv. Robinson said.

Driver Charged after Leaving Single Car Crash with Injury, property damage

JOHNSTON – An Edgefield man has been arrested and is facing four charges after a single vehicle crash Saturday morning on Slide Hill Road in Johnston that inured one of the passengers, which he dropped off at another location after fleeing the scene with property damage. Mathew Glanton, 45, was arrested at a home on Edisto Street where he was found still behind the wheel of the wrecked Chrysler 300 he was driving.

Suspicious Activity Report Finds Teens Having Sex at Retirement Complex

MERRIWETHER – A resident at the Vintage Gardens Retirement Complex reported two people in two different vehicles parked on the property and told dispatchers she believed the man and woman were in one of the vehicles having sex around 6:30 Saturday night. An Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputy arrived moments later and found the two; a 17-year-old female and a 19-year-old male in the back of one of the vehicles disrobed.

Johnston Police Investigating Bizarre Domestic Violence Case

JOHNSTON – A Johnston man is in custody and a woman is in the Trauma Center following a bizarre 911 call at 4:33 am Sunday with the man claiming he is handcuffed to his girlfriend and she is unconscious and unresponsive at the couple's home on Rolland Avenue. The man claimed the woman had taken an unknown number of pain pills. When Johnston Police arrived on the scene the woman had obvious head and facial wounds and the man had cuts to his right arm and left hand.

Entrapped Crash Victim Flown to Trauma Center

COUNTY – An Edgefield County man was flown to the Trauma Center in Augusta following a one vehicle crash on Rainsford Road Friday afternoon. The man was trapped in the Dodge pickup and it took nearly an hour to remove him from the wreckage. The Merriwether Extraction Team responded to the scene as well as Edgefield Fire Department, EMS, Sheriff's Deputies and the Highway Patrol. The roadway was closed during the entire rescue operation.

SCDOT Worker Flown to Trauma Center after Collision During Line Painting

NORTHSIDE – A late night crash involving a car and a South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) truck shortly after midnight left four people injured after a car struck a SCDOT "blocker truck" during line painting on Highway 25 north near Turkey Creek around 12:30 am Saturday. A helicopter was dispatched to transport the injured SCDOT worker who was riding on the side of the DOT truck.

Firefighters Called back to House Destroyed by Fire

EDGEFIELD – Edgefield Firefighters were back out at the remains of the Thurmond Street home that burned down early Friday morning. Around 2:30 Friday afternoon Dispatch was notified that the fire had rekindled and was actively burning. Firefighters battled the blaze well into the early morning after the home was found fully engulfed in flames just after 1 am by a neighbor.

EDGEFIELD – Edgefield and Trenton Firefighters were called to a house fire just after 1 am Friday when a neighbor reported seeking flames. Edgefield Fire crews arrived and reported the home, located at 217 Thurmond Street, was fully engulfed and requested mutual aid from Trenton.

Jackson Fatal Crash Victims Identified

AIKEN – The names of the two fatalities from Thursday morning's crash in Jackson have been released, Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said in a release Thursday evening. The two fatalities were listed as 73 year old Larry Hicks of Beech Island SC and Martha Barsh, 84 year old of Jackson SC.

I see Edgefield got it right and withdrew the TIF, for now. However, the county council seems dead set on increasing taxes that the Edgefield Daily poll shows 71% of readers oppose. The county has a $9 million annual budget and the proposed sales tax increase will increase that by 10%.

Ms. Smith is the mother of Sean Smith, an information management officer killed in the 9/11 Benghazi attack. Charles Woods is the father of Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods, who was also killed.

WESTSIDE – Three people were injured in a collision at the intersection of Highways 23 and 230 Wednesday morning when the driver of a Toyota Camry failed to see an 18-wheeler as they entered off Martintown Road onto Hwy 23. The Toyota struck the trailer of the truck carrying a telephone pole and pushed it off the roadway pinning the car underneath and against the rear tires of the trailer.

15-year-old Kills Teen over Video Game

AUGUSTA – A 15-year-old has been arrested and charged as an adult in a fatal stabbing on Neptune Drive of another teen over a video game. Zemartae Davis, 15 has been charged in the stabbing death of 18-year-old Datravious Hoskins, both of Neptune Drive in Augusta. Richmond County Sheriff's Deputies were called to the scene following the discovery of Hoskins' being found on Neptune Drive near Cindy Drive with fatal injuries Tuesday morning.

Batesburg Man Charged in Molestation of Little Girls

JOHNSTON – A Batesburg man has been arrested following an ongoing investigation into multiple small children being molested repeatedly since 2008 and continuing until the investigation was launched in August. Michael Jacobi Rauch, 29, was taken into custody on Saturday afternoon and booked at the Edgefield County Detention Center on enough charges that, if found guilty, he could spend the rest of his life in prison. His female victims ranged in ages between 6 an 14 and none were related to him.

Fourth Armed Robbery Suspect in Custody

JOHNSTON – A fourth suspect allegedly connected to a armed robbery and assault of a Johnston man last week has been arrested. Cleveland D. Gaskins, 27, turned himself in in Saluda Monday morning and was transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center where he was booked into custody on charges of attempted armed robbery and assault and battery in the first degree. He is still being held on a total of $6,000 in surety bonds.

The 1968 State Title and four Conference Championships from the 1960’s were a distant memory as the 70’s brought hard times to the once feared program. Legendary coaches Hubert Morris and Bettis Herlong, that once headed the pride of Edgefield County, had moved on in their careers and the Strom Thurmond football tradition was suffering.

Three Arrested, Fourth at large, Following Alleged Armed Robbery

JOHNSTON – Three men have been arrested and a fourth remains at large following a Johnston man reported being held hostage at gunpoint as the men demanded $300 late Tuesday night. The victim's mother called in the first report sending Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputies racing to the scene. After making contact with the victim it was learned the crime took place in the Town of Johnston and the investigation was turned over to Johnston Police.

EDGEFIELD – Edgefield Town Administrator Roger LeDuc sent a letter to the Edgefield County Council and the School District on Thursday officially withdrawing the town's request for the proposed TIF District for the downtown area. The proposal will be resubmitted at a later date giving all elected bodies more information and a longer time frame for the proposal to be discussed. Edgefield Daily received a copy of the letter Thursday afternoon from Mr. LeDuc.

One Dead Three Injured in Aiken County Collision

AIKEN – According to Aiken County Corner Tim Carlton, a motorcycle versus truck collision in Aiken County has claimed the life of 59 year old Daniel F. Favors of Beech Island SC. Mr .Favors and his wife Kathy Favors were riding their 1993 Harley Davidson motorcycle  on Huber Clay Rd in Langley SC when they were struck by a 2005 Chevrolet Truck driven by Marshall White Sr. of Bath SC. The collision happened near the Aiken County Landfill (Langley) on Huber Clay Rd at approximately 4:30 PM.

County Council Cancels Special Called Meeting

EDGEFIELD – After receiving notice that the Town of Edgefield has withdrawn their request for a public hearing concerning their proposed Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District on October 7, Edgefield County Council has cancelled its special called meeting that was scheduled on September 19, 2013 to discuss this topic. The public hearing and the Tax Increment Financing Ordinance have also been removed from the October 1 agenda until the Town of Edgefield presents a new proposal.

EDGEFIELD – The mother of a Burt Street woman called 911 to report her daughter's house ransacked and items missing when she went to check on the home just before 6 pm. After checking the front door and finding it secure she went to the read and found the back door wide open. She entered the home and found rooms ransacked and went back out to call 911 stating she had not touched anything but the rear screen door on her way out.

SPORTS – Strom Thurmond played its first Friday 13th game on October 13, 1961 at home (Watson Park Johnston) against Swansea. The Rebels lost a close one by the score of 7-6. Two weeks later, the Rebels hosted Batesburg-Leesville for the first game in a series that has continued to be competitive and exciting through the first 48 meetings. Strom Thurmond won that first meeting by a score of 19-6.

Warrants Issued for Man Fleeing Checkpoint

MERRIWETHER – Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputies were conducting a Safety Checkpoint on Woodlawn Road near Martintown Road late Monday night when deputies observed a Chevrolet truck pull up to the checkpoint and put the truck in park. When deputies approached the driver he "snatched the vehicle into drive" and fled the scene squealing tires and endangering the lives of the deputies.

Metal Thieves Steal HVAC Unit

COUNTY LINE – Metal thieves struck a home on the 1300 block of Edgefield Road (Hwy 25 south) stealing a $5,000 HVAC unit located beside the home. The woman called to report the theft Monday morning when she discovered it missing. She told a deputy that the unit is used to cool a portion of the house that is not often used. The second unit was not tampered with.

NORTHSIDE – A man returning to his home on the 1500 block of Walker Road Sunday evening after being out of town for the weekend and discovered a window open and his back door unlocked. County Council 1% Sales Tax Committee Nominees Names Released

EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield County Council announced at Tuesday night's meeting that the council had received three nominees for the committee to study the possibility of a 1% sales tax added to all purchases in the county to support capital improvements. County Council Approves Rezoning for Proposed Industrial Site

EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield County Council held their September meeting Tuesday night with some split votes and a twist added on an agenda item. The pivotal vote of the night, the rezoning for an industrial site that failed for a lack of a majority last month was approved during a first reading. Council members Dean Campbell, Genia Blackwell and Rodney Ashcraft voted in the affirmative while members Norman Dorn and Betty Butler voted no.

Two Injured after item on Military Transport Falls off Truck

EDGEFIELD – Two people were injured after a piece of a military transport trailer towed by a military truck came loose on Highway 23 between Edgefield and Johnston Tuesday morning. 911 Dispatchers got the report around 11:30 stating the item had crashed into a civilian truck going in the opposite direction injuring the driver and passenger.

Shots Fired After Sunday Night Home Invasion

EDGEFIELD – Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputies were called to a shooting incident following a late night home invasion on the 200 block of Oak Street just before Midnight Sunday. The woman living at the home called 911 to report a man knocking at her back door and when she answered it the man engaged in a verbal dispute and then forced his way inside the home. When he spotted another man in the home visiting the woman both men ran out and shots were fired.

Former Rebel Standout Charged in Sex Crimes at US Naval Academy

ANNAPOLIS MD – Former star linebacker for the Strom Thurmond Rebels, Tre'vas Bush, 22, now playing safety for Navy, has been charged along with two other Midshipmen for a sexual assault on a female student at an off campus party in April of 2012. Bush signed with Navy after graduating in 2009 and being named the Augusta Chronicle's SC Player of the Year. He, and two others, are facing criminal charges and possible court-martial due to the case.

Johnston Man Reports Armed Robbery, Refuses to Press Charges

JOHNSTON – A Johnston man reported being robbed at gunpoint around 6 pm Sunday and described his attackers with detail including the gun and the white Ford Crown Victoria the men were driving. Coincidentally, the same car and the three men were stopped by Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputies in Trenton on a complaint of reckless driving shortly before the report and were allowed to continue on their way.
