Edgefield County Sheriff's Narcotics and SWAT Team Raid Nets One Arrest; More Expected

MERRIWETHER – The Edgefield County Sheriff's Narcotics Division began receiving complaints and information that the owner of a cleared lot with a dog kennel and tent structures on the 800 block of Briggs Road was involved in possible criminal activity. According to available information, there were claims of stolen scrap metal being "broken down" before selling under the tents and the manufacture and distribution of methamphetamine as well. An investigation was launched and when enough evidence was collected.

Players of the Week: Plus Week 5 Stats

SPORTS – A Rebel team decimated with injuries battled one of the top teams in the state last Friday night for their final non region contest. Offensive player of the week was Deandre Ryan. Ryan, filling in for injured quarterback Tyree Stidem, did an admiral job of keeping the Rebels in the game for four quarters. Defensive player of the week goes to Tannor Byrd. Byrd snagged his team leading 3rd interception of the season and gathered six tackles. Both are juniors.

MERRIWETHER – A half year of planning and a lot of background preparation provided for a very successful A Decade Strong, the ten year celebration of Fox Creek High School, on Thursday, September 26. According to principal, Josh Trahan, close to 800 alumni students, alumni parents, and present students and parents showed up to eat free food donated by local vendors, to experience a fun pep rally to prepare for the homecoming game the following night.

Searches for Missing Woman Come Up Empty

MERRIWETHER – Two more searches for Tamera Kingery over the weekend came up empty with no new leads being gained. The first was conducted by the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office on Friday morning and covered about 2.5 miles of wooded areas around the home. The second search, conducted by friends of the missing woman on Saturday, did report finding what appeared to be a freshly dug grave covered with debris.

WESTSIDE  – On, 9/19/2014 our family pets went missing off Garrett Rd. Hershey is a brown pit bull, and was wearing a black collar. The number on tag is incorrect because we just moved to this area. However, she is micro-chipped with address up to date. Bogart (Left) is an Italian mastiff, who is around eight months old, very large, a deceivingly looks full grown. He did not have his collar on. He is formentino - blonde body with silver mask on his face (much lighter in color than shown in this picture). Both are very sweet and approachable. PTC Academic Honor Students from Edgefield County Recognized for 2014 Summer Term

EDGEFIELD – Piedmont Technical College students who had outstanding academic accomplishments during the 2014 summer term have earned inclusion on the President’s List. To be named to the list, students must be full time and earn a term GPA of 4.00. Students will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the college president.

Crash Victim Identified

EDGEFIELD – Edgefield County Deputy Coroner David Burnett confirmed the identity of the driver killed in a single vehicle crash Friday night. Heather Nicole Holsomback, 30, of Johnston, was pronounced dead on the scene of a fiery crash that closed all traffic on Highway 23 at Dead Man's Curve for nearly two hours.

WESTSIDE – One person is dead after a violent crash on Highway 23 at the notorious "Dead Man's Curve" located halfway between Edgefield and the Martintown Road intersection at the Westside Fire Department. The driver, identified only as a white female, was pronounced dead on the scene after being ejected from the Chevy Blazer she was driving as it burst into flames after leaving the roadway.

The junior took on a new role as quarterback in Friday’s prime time matchup against North Augusta due to Tyree Stidem nursing an ankle injury sustained last week at South Aiken. “Deandre did an outstanding job tonight considering the circumstances. Highway 23 Blocked To All Traffic Due to Fatality

WESTSIDE – A fiery single vehicle crash has killed at least one and Westside Firefighters, Sheriff's Deputies and EMS are working to find if there are others inside the burning vehicle or ejected. At least one person was ejected from the crash and was dead on the scene. When the first emergency personnel arrived on the scene the vehicle was off the road and fully engulfed in flames. The location is the notorious "Dead Man's Curve" on Hwy 23.

Search for Missing Merriwether Woman Expands to CSRA

MERRIWETHER – Today marks day seven since 37-year-old Tamera Sue Kingery left the family's Mealing Drive home to go for a walk last Saturday, leaving behind a note that read: "Going for a walk, be back soon, love you." After reading the note, Kingery's husband Park told News 6 that, "I knew something wasn't right." The note was written in her normal handwriting and it was unclear why the simple note disturbed the husband.

MERRIWETHER – Steve Jones and other friends have arranged to have search parties ready to spend this Saturday searching wooded areas in and around where Tamera Russell Kingery, 37, went missing last Saturday on Mealing Road and Country Club Road. At this time they have not confirmed help from any law enforcement agency to assist in the search, but will go it alone if none comes through, said Steve Jones, one of the organizers of the search. As stated previously, many of the items listed were based on values placed many years ago, and current values are being researched and are expected to go much higher. Some of the guns have serial numbers listed in this report. Another ATV Stolen from Merriwether Home

MERRIWETHER – Merriwether is in the news again with another ATV stolen from a home, this time on West Five Notch Road. The homeowner told a deputy responding to his call that he left his home to go out of town on September 14 and returned on Wednesday to discover the theft.

Hunley Exhibit making its first visit to the county on Friday, September 26, and will be located in the parking lot next to Piedmont Technical College on Main Street from 9am until 5pm. The full size replica of the first submarine to sink an enemy ship will be a once in a lifetime experience for many and will draw people from all over the state, and beyond. The actual sub is still undergoing conservation efforts to preserve it for future generations.

County Schools Join United Way of Edgefield County

COUNTY – The United Way of Edgefield County and the public schools in the Edgefield County School District are joining forces again this year to benefit all. The local United Way is offering a $500 incentive grant to the Edgefield County School that raises the most money per capita for the local United Way. Last year, Douglas Elementary School won the incentive grant.

Hit and Run Driver Charged with Assault and Battery in the First Degree

COUNTY LINE – A Johnston man called 911 Sunday after he was struck while standing next to his car by another driver who then fled the scene at a home on the 1900 block of Edgefield Road around 4:30 am. Sheriff's Deputies and EMS were called to the scene. The man complained of injuries to his legs from where he was caught between the suspect's Red Impala and his car and was transported to the Trauma Center for treatment.

Burglars Steal over $120,000 in Property from Westside Home

WESTSIDE – An Abel Drive man left his home around 10 am Tuesday and returned home around 4 pm to find the back door to his home forced open and his house burglarized and called 911. It was not until the home was cleared and the owner being allowed inside to take an inventory of his belongings that the scope of the burglary began to sink in. The initial list of stolen property totaled $122,300 and damages to the back door added another $1,500.

Grandmother Finds Grandson's Stolen Motorcycle

MERRIWETHER – A 78-year-old grandmother called the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday to report a "mini-motorcycle" belonging to her grandson having been seen at a home in Murphy Village. The motorcycle, valued at $750, was reported stolen from her Big Oak Drive home on September 13 by her grandson.

MERRIWETHER – One would think having a vehicle parked in your driveway while you are at home is less likely to be stolen. That was not the case for a Stephens Road man early Wednesday morning when he walked outside around 2:30 am and found his $1,8000 ATV missing from his driveway. The man told the responding deputy that the last time he saw the ATV was around 9 pm Tuesday before going inside.

Family of Unarmed Man Killed in Police Shooting Suing Edgefield County, Sheriff's Office and North Augusta Police

EDGEFIELD – The Probate Court appointed Personal Representative of the Estate of Earnest Satterwhite, the man shot and killed following a low speed pursuit by North Augusta Police Officer Justin Craven on February 9, has filed a lawsuit against Edgefield County, the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office and the North Augusta Department of Public Safety seeking unspecified damages for wrongful death and seeks a jury trial. The officer involved in the shooting, Justin Craven, was recently indicted for "misconduct in office" by an Edgefield County Grand Jury. There were not enough votes to indict on the charge of manslaughter related to the shooting.

Will the Walls… Come Tumbling Down?

EDGEFIELD – As Edgefield Daily reported in August, the Edgefield County Building and Planning Office has filed and labeled ten structures in the county now officially deemed "dangerous". At the top of that list is the Landmark Plantation House, also known by it's older name, The Dixie Highway Hotel". The county has ordered the owners of the building to bring it back up to code, or at very least make improvements to make the building "safe". They did not respond back to the county so the legal matter was turned over to Edgefield Town Attorney Jennifer Sumner. According to her, the future for the old hotel is grim at best.

JOHNSTON – STCTC is making movies. “My students are learning all the components of video production including lighting, sound, equipment operation and editing” stated Jack Chandler, STCTC’s new Digital Media Marketing teacher. The course is designed for students to complete video projects. “Video is a part of our lives and its impact is increasing. From websites to monitors in fast-food restaurants to directions on how to assemble products we purchase, video is utilized more and more” explained Arthur Northrop, STCTC Director.

SPORTS – Dalton Williams and Joe Sauls combined to pitch a no hitter as the Edgefield Xtreme 12U defeated the North Augusta United 12-2 in 4 innings Tuesday night.  Williams would get the start and go 3 innings, allowing no hits while walking 4.  Sauls would pick up his first save of the season while turning in 1 inning of work, facing only 3 United batters.

Sheriff's Office Still Seeking "Endangered" Missing Woman

MERRIWETHER – As of Monday, the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office has no new information of the whereabouts of Tamera Sue Kingery, 37, who walked away from the Mealing Road home Saturday morning around 10 am and has yet to be found. Due to the circumstances surrounding her disappearance, Authorities feel Kingery is in danger and the sooner she can be found the better for her and the family.

Trenton Home Burglarized While Owner at Beach

TRENTON – A Courtney Road woman called the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office around 3 pm Sunday after returning from a weekend trip to Myrtle Beach to find her home burglarized. Upon arriving she knew something was wrong when she noticed a screen had been removed from a window on the back of the house and after entering the house immediately noticing several items missing.

Gardner Road Home Targeted by Thieves Stealing Jewelry and Cash

MERRIWETHER – A Merriwether woman arriving after being out of town for a few days reported her Gardner Road home being robbed of jewelry and cash while finding items that did not belong to her inside and outside of the home. According to an incident report, the woman believed the person or persons involved in the burglary may have actually stayed in the home while she was away and accidentally leaving their property behind.

When they arrived home a neighbor approached them and said he spotted a white male on a small blue ATV sitting at the back door to the home. When the neighbor yelled at the man he sped away from the scene.

Fire Destroys Family Home Saturday Night

COUNTY LINE – A Jacob McKie Road couple called 911 to report their home on fire around 6 pm Saturday after the saw smoke and investigated and saw fire "racing" up the stairs. She yelled for her husband, who was in other part of the house, and they were able to exit the home before it erupted in flames. Three fire departments responded, County Line, Merriwether and Trenton, and fought the flames into the early morning hours Sunday.

MERRIWETHER – The Edgefield County Sheriff's Office is seeking the public's help in locating a missing 37-year-old woman that walked away from the family home on Mealing Road in Merriwether earlier today around 10 am. Tamera Sue Kingery is a white female standing 5' 3" and weighs around 130 pounds. She has brown hair with blonde highlights and hazel eyes. Last seen wearing a light colored shirt, blue jeans and carrying a Hard Rock Café backpack. She is considered Missing and Endangered. Rebels Dealt Last Second Defeat Against South Aiken

SPORTS – Strom Thurmond was up 13-2 with 9:55 to play and it seemed they were on their way to overcoming a game marred by rain, penalties and miscues at South Aiken Friday night. Immediately following Cole Fell’s 20 yard field goal which put the Rebels up 11 points in the 4th quarter, a ten to fifteen minute stoppage of play due to an illness on South Aiken’s sideline, resulted in a drastic turn around in the game’s momentum.

Sheriff's Office Makes Arrest in Burglary of Paces Creek Home

EDGEFIELD – A Trenton man arriving at his Paces Creek Road home after an extended visit with his son in April knew immediately something was wrong with his truck missing. The entire home had been ransacked, countless items stolen from the home as well as an outbuilding. Investigators arrive on the scene around 3:30 am and were able to collect enough evidence to make an arrest this week.

EDGEFIELD – The "Pool Room", officially named the Edgefield Billiard Parlor, is without doubt the most well known watering hole where locals can get the famous Pool Room hamburger and a cold beer while shooting a quick game of pool. On weekend the locals gather to watch football on the big screen. Since 1961, that included ashtrays along the bar, on the tables and in the billiards seating and standing area. That officially ended this week when a sign went up on the door informing customers smoking was no longer allowed.

WESTSIDE  – Yesterday, 9/19/2014 our family pets went missing off Garrett Rd. Hershey is a brown pit bull, and was wearing a black collar. The number on tag is incorrect because we just moved to this area. However, she is micro-chipped with address up to date. Bogart (Left) is an Italian mastiff, who is around eight months old, very large, a deceivingly looks full grown. He did not have his collar on. He is formentino - blonde body with silver mask on his face (much lighter in color than shown in this picture). Both are very sweet and approachable. The family will be receiving friends at the church immediately following the service. A private burial will be at Sunset Gardens memorial Park in Johnston on Saturday morning. Bland Funeral Home will be assisting the family with arrangements.

This is an individual who shattered all kinds of records by volunteering his services to the Strom Thurmond High School Football Program for the last forty six years. In 1967, Mr. Bledsoe began work as a volunteer with the “First and 10” chain crew. He continued to do this for the next forty six years. This year the side lines seemed bare as it marks the first year since 1967 that Mr. Bledsoe can sit in the stands and pull for his beloved Rebels.

Neighbor Calls Victim About Burglary at Her Home

JOHNSTON – A Johnston woman was at work Wednesday night when she received a call from a neighbor telling her that the front door to her Pine Log Trail home was wide open. The woman left work and when she arrived home the door was in fact open and pry marks showed it was forced open and she called the Sheriff's Office to report a burglary.

Sports Preview: Rebels Travel to South Aiken

SPORTS – The Strom Thurmond Rebels (3-0) are coming off a big win over Midland Valley and will continue their all Aiken County non region schedule this week with a trip to South Aiken (1-2). The Rebel offense, led by senior Tyree Stidem, has scored 42 points in each of its last two outings. Stidem is 31-53-526 yards and four touchdowns through the air which leads the area in passing. The Thoroughbreds picked up their first win of the season with a 35-14 victory over Glenn Hills last week.

Ivy Claire Huiet of Trenton, and twins Bradley and Johnathan Kemp of Edgefield (Left), recently won national shag contests in Atlanta, Georgia and Ocean Drive, South Carolina. Junior Wide Receiver Padgett Sumner (Left) was selected as offensive player of the game. Sumner had 4 catches 89 yards and one score. Farm News: Fall Armyworms Are Here in South Carolina

COUNTY – Fall armyworms, Spodoptera frugiperda, are protracted pest in the Southeast. The worms feed on a variety of forage crops, but seem to prefer lush, green, fertilized Bermuda grass. Additional forage grasses that are hosts for armyworms are Bahia grass, pearl millet, sorghum-sudan hybrids, tall fescue, and various winter annuals including ryegrass, rye, wheat, and oats. More than 80 plants recorded as hosts of the fall armyworm, which majority of them being grasses.  Armyworms have also been found on corn, alfalfa, cotton, soybeans, and most vegetable crops.

The woman "thought" she put her car in park before getting out, but as she walked between the cars her car crept forward and pinned her between the two cars.

EDGEFIELD – Steven Louis Barnes, who was given the sentence of death as the ringleader in the premeditated murder and kidnapping of 16-year-old Samuel Sturrup Jr., of Augusta, on Sept. 3, of 2001 in Edgefield County, has seen his 2010 death penalty overturned by the SC Supreme Court in October of 2013. The high court ruled on a 3-2 decision that Barnes should have been allowed to act as his own attorney, rather than the two appointed for him - an issue raised by the Defense before the first trial ever got underway.

Williams Found Not Guilty

EDGEFIELD – In a surprise verdict, an Edgefield County Jury found Joseph Connell Williams not guilty on all counts concerning the alleged repeated raping of two young girls over a period of years. The jury heard both of the victims take the stand as they relived the traumatic attacks. Williams was charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct with a child under 16 and 14 and two counts of lewd act on a minor under the age of 14 stemming from the investigation when one of the victims came forward five years ago.

Williams Child Rape Trial goes to Jury Today

EDGEFIELD – The trial of Joseph Connell Williams, 46, who is accused of repeatedly raping two young girls over a period of years, will be handed to the jury sometime Friday. The State rested their case early Thursday and the defense wrapped up their case later in the afternoon. The jury was released for the day and is expected back first thing Friday morning for closing arguments.

JOHNSTON – A press release from Johnston Mayor Terrance Culbreath was issue Wednesday afternoon around 3:30 stating that he had officially appointed interim Police Chief Lamaz Robinson as Police Chief for the Town of Johnston proper, and that an official swearing in ceremony will be held at the next meeting of the Johnston Town Council on October 13, 2014. Within an hour of the announcement, several people began questioning the Mayor's promise to open the position up for applicants for 90 days, which was not done.

Some thought it was closed for good, and for good reason, the previous owner had informed the staff he was closing the restaurant. Lamaz Robinson Officially Takes Job as Police Chief

JOHNSTON – In a late afternoon press release Wednesday, Johnston Mayor Terrance Culbreath announced he had appointed interim Police Chief Lamaz Robinson to Police Chief proper. Accused Child Rapist Trial Underway

EDGEFIELD – An Edgefield man accused of raping two young girls over a period of years began his day in court on Wednesday. Joseph Connell Williams, 46, is charged with criminal sexual conduct in the first degree with a child under 16, two counts, and two counts of a lewd act on a minor under the age of 14. The trial took only five years to make its way to the courthouse.

Man Arrested after Alleged Attack with Assault Rifle

NORTHSIDE – A 35-year-old Edgefield County man was arrested after allegedly confronting a man dropping off material at the hunting property that belongs to a friend of the victim, and at one point firing several rounds from an SKS assault rifle at him as he tried to leave the property. William Logue was taken into custody at the scene that kept investigator busy for hours trying to sort out what really happened.

Thieves Steal Landscaping Trailer and Tools

MERRIWETHER – A local landscaping company arrived to hook up his work trailer loaded with well over $10,000 worth of mowers and other lawn care equipment Tuesday morning and found the entire set up gone and called the Sheriff's Office to report the theft. The trailer was parked behind the home of a relative on West Five Notch Road and could not be seen from the roadway, making the theft even more suspicious.

Athletic Trainer Joins Strom Thurmond Career and Technology Center (STCTC) Team

JOHNSTON – Strom Thurmond’s Athletic Department and Career and Technology Center have an Athletic Trainer this year. Lisa Nichols joined the STCTC staff to teach Sports Medicine. Mrs. Nichols will teach the last two blocks each day at the Career and Technology Center and serve as the Athletic Trainer for each of the Rebel’s athletic teams.

SPORTS – The Rebel stats continue to climb after a dominating performance against Silver Bluff last week in Petticoat Junction. Tyrece Nick picked up offensive player of the week and Malik Nicholson was named defensive player of the week.
