Update on Editor’s Condition

web posted March 10, 2014

AUGUSTA – The Editor remains at University Hospital’s Infectious Disease Unit and is resting comfortably as possible under the circumstances as he enters day eight of his hospitalization. The first five days were at the Edgefield County Hospital. The serious infection is restricted to the lower right leg, ankle and foot. Although a great deal of progress has been made, much more must be accomplished before he can be released.

Several tests show that the infection is not in the bloodstream, which is a very positive result, and it is not spreading. The Editor remains in a great deal of pain that is being controlled, most of the time, with strong narcotics.

Another battery of test will get underway on Monday for doctors to better understand the situation. Once certain goals are met he will be released and will still have to have outpatient treatments for a week or more, depending how effective they are and how he responds to those treatments.

Although some people have been made aware of the room number, be advised that the hospital phone is not working and your call will sound like it is ringing, but it is not ringing in the room. The hospital has been made aware of the problem.

The Editor released the following statement Sunday night: “I would like to express my deep appreciation to the overwhelming number of cards, letters emails, and prayers that have been lifted up in my name. Many have brought tears to my eyes with the love expressed. I have always referred to our readers as ‘family’, and it is a quite fitting description with the outpouring of support. Thank you and May God Bless you all.”
