Approximately $17,000 in Scholarships Offered to Students Attending
CSRA College Night
web posted September 1, 2010
AUGUSTA – High school students will have an
opportunity to meet recruiters from more than 150 colleges and
universities and win scholarships totaling approximately $17,000 at
CSRA College Night, to be held Tuesday, Sept. 14, 5-8:30 p.m., at the
James Brown Arena, Augusta, Ga. Admission is free, and the event
is open to the public.
“College Night provides a valuable resource to CSRA high school
students as they decide which college or university to attend,” said
Barbara Smoak, Education Outreach Manager, Savannah River Nuclear
Solutions, LLC (SRNS). “Working with our co-sponsors, we’re pleased to
help continue a tradition that provides one-stop shopping for a large
and diverse selection of college and university recruiters.”
According to Smoak, the extent of information provided to area students
during College Night is impressive.
“Nearly the entire floor of the arena is filled with information booths
manned by recruiters representing colleges and universities from
throughout the U.S.,” said Smoak." Last year more than 6,000 CSRA
students, parents and guidance counselors visited information booths,
quizzed university representatives and participated in seminars.
College Night provides a way for CSRA students and parents to:
• Obtain information on educational opportunities,
admission requirements and tuition;
• Speak with representatives from various
professional societies who will be on hand to provide information in
areas such as engineering, management, chemical science and nuclear
science;
• Attend seminars to get information about HOPE and
LIFE scholarships, financial aid and essay writing for college
admissions, scholarships and joint enrollment;
• Visit a counseling center that will be open
throughout the evening where students and parents can seek advice about
the college application process from high school advisors and
admissions professionals; and
• Visit a career exploration area where students can
discover their options after college. Students will be able to
participate in a quick “card sort” interest inventory to validate their
career choice.
To qualify for a College Night scholarship, students must be high
school juniors or seniors and graduate with a GPA equal or above 2.5 on
a 4.0 scale (or equivalent). Students must attend and register in
person at CSRA College Night to be eligible.
CSRA College Night is sponsored by the U.S. Department of
Energy-Savannah River Operations Office, Savannah River Nuclear
Solutions, SRP Federal Credit Union and Clear Channel Radio/Power107;
in partnership with Westminster Schools of Augusta. Other
contributors include: Augusta Preparatory Day School, Aiken County
Public School Career Specialists and Counselors, Wackenhut Services,
Inc., Augusta Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Communigraphics, National
Science Center’s Fort Discovery, Augusta Marriott Hotel and Suites,
Southern Nuclear - Plant Vogtle, Society of Women Engineers (Central
Savannah River Area Section), American Nuclear Society (Savannah River
Section), Washington Safety Management Solutions, South Carolina
Society of Professional Engineers (Aiken Chapter), and American
Association of Cost Engineers International, (CSRA Section).
