Teen Facing Weapons Charges Following Safety Checkpoint Stop

web posted March 5, 2013

BETTIS ACADEMY – Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputies conducting a Safety Checkpoint on Bettis Academy Road at Nicholson Road late Friday night resulted in a 17-year-old Edgefield County teen found to have a stolen pistol in his pocket during a standard pat-down. Antwan Diondra Nathaniel was arrested on the scene once the weapon was found in his pants pocket.

According to an incident report released on Monday, a 2000 Ford Explorer approached the check point when the officer noticed an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle while asking the driver for license, registration and insurance papers. The driver was asked to pull to the side of the road for further investigation.

After asking the driver and passenger (Nathaniel) to step out of the vehicle a standard pat down was performed on both when a deputy felt something in the right front pocket of Nathaniel's pants. When asked what it was he stated a pistol, the report states.

He was placed in handcuffs and taken into custody. The Lorcin Model LT25 .25 caliber pistol was removed from his pocket and was later found to be stolen.

Nathaniel was transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center and booked into custody pending warrants for possession of a stolen pistol and possession of a pistol by someone under the age of 18.

The incident report did not mention any charges on the driver and did not state if any drugs were found in the vehicle.
