Bus wreck sends four to MCG Friday morning

web posted Apri 28, 2006

BETTIS ACADEMY – A three car pile up sent four to MCG early Friday morning, two of which were children on an Edgefield County School Bus. Shortly before 8:00 am an Edgefield County School bus was attempting to make a left turn on Williams Road, just below the Bettis Academy Road intersection on Highway 25, when a red Jeep Cherokee slammed into a Dodge pick-up truck forcing it into the school bus.

The bus driver said she was almost to a stop to make the turn when she looked behind her and saw the truck slowing down and the jeep coming towards them fast, “I just held on to the steering wheel,” she said.

The Jeep Cherokee hit the truck and pushed it into the bus pushing part of the truck underneath the bus. The driver of the truck was taken to MCG by ambulance. The driver of the Jeep Cherokee was examined and also transported to MCG.

Of the eight or nine children on the bus, only two complained of back and stomach injuries. The two brothers were in the back of the bus at the time of the crash. They were immobilized and taken to MCG Children’s Medical Center for treatment. Their injuries were not thought to be serious.

Traffic on Highway 25 was backed up for over a mile in both directions due to the crash. The scene is still being cleared at this writing and the South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating. EdgefieldDaily.com will have an update as more information becomes available. Dr. Sharon Keesley and other school officials were on the scene comforting the children. Another student on the bus was taken later to the hospital by the parents later in the morning.
