Community Road erupts with melee, wreck,
injuries, and no reported arrests Edgefielddaily.com web posted July 25, 2005 BETTIS ACADEMY - The Community Road area erupted into a large melee involving more than two dozen teens early Sunday morning which involved a car accident, reports of a man with a gun, fights, and one individual at the hospital with injuries from an attack with a baseball bat. Based on preliminary information it appears a rap group, made up of area youths being hosted at a party by three houses on Lakeview Drive, were part of the melee that began around 12:25 am Sunday morning. Reports to dispatchers of a man with a gun came in first around 12:25 am. Five minutes later a report of an accident came in which the driver was reported to have left the scene on foot. That accident, according to Sergeant Donald Morris of the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office, was a “sixteen year old who was going to the party and changed his mind and tried to turn around when he was hit broadside by an individual pulling a racecar at the intersection of Community Road and Highway 25.” There were no injuries in the accident and the youth, who did not have a license, was ticketed by the South Carolina Highway Patrol Sgt. Morris said. Several Edgefield County Deputies responded to the calls as well as the South Carolina Highway Patrol officers. Deputies began rounding up individuals involved and said many had left the area before Deputies arrived. Calls with reports continued to come in over the next hour and one individual was reported at the Edgefield County Hospital with injuries resulting from being beaten with a baseball bat. “He was not sure who hit him,” Sgt. Morris said and stated the victim was supposed to be filing charges with the Madgistrate's Office. It was unclear if those charges had been pursued yet according to Deputy Morris. Sgt. Morris said at least twenty five teens were involved in the reported incident, "most had run off before we got there," he said. Return to Main Page
