Woman assaulted by burglar

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted August 11, 2005

BETTIS ACADEMY - Around 6 pm Wednesday afternoon a woman who lives on the 90 block of Academy Estates heard her dogs barking and went outside to investigate. The dogs led her to the shed where she expected to find a snake and encountered a burglar instead. As soon as the man saw her he “punched her in the left side of her face,” knocking her to the ground as he made his escape Investigator Randy Doran said. He ran towards the Bettis Academy area the woman said.

The Sheriff’s Department was called and all available deputies and even some reserve officers were called to the scene. Deputies searched the entire area for the next several hours but were unable to locate the individual. The bloodhounds were called in but soon afterwards rain moving into the area made their presence moot.

Investigators said they have recovered evidence that they say leads them to an individual they are seeking for another break-in around the same area. They would not expound on what that evidence was. Investigator Doran said the woman said they have had problems with people around the area for about six months but had never reported the problem to the police.

The suspect is described as a black male approximately 25 years of age between 5’ 10” to 6’ tall and weighing about 150-160 pounds with short black hair. He was last seen wearing black jeans, a white T-shirt, and red and white tennis shoes. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Department at 803-637-5337 or 803-278-1625. You need not reveal your identity in order to give information.
