Councilman complains about teens playing at public park

web posted September 26, 2006

BETTIS ACADEMY – Edgefield County Councilman Willie Bright called the Edgefield Sheriff’s Office Sunday afternoon to complain about a small group of Hispanic teens playing on the football field at Bettis Park. When a deputy arrived Mr. Bright explained he wanted the teens removed from the ball field. The deputy asked if the park was a pubic park and Councilman Bright stated it was, but that did not give the teens the ability to jump the fence and play on the field.

The deputy tried to explain the procedure for trespassing and notices to Mr. Bright but Mr. Bright became “annoyed”, police reports stated. Councilman Bright stated he has called on three other occasions and nothing was ever done about teens playing on the field at the public park.

Councilman Bright told the deputy the county paid $9,000 for the fence to protect the field from youths gaining access to the park and that the lines on the field had been painted for a game on Monday night. Becoming further annoyed, Councilman Bright asked how many deputies the Sheriff’s Office had employed and the deputy gave him the number. At that time Mr. Bright is reported to have responded that he pays too much in taxes to have deputies, “running up and down the roads in patrol cars,” the report states.

The deputy informed Councilman Bright that he was going to talk to the teens but needed information from him first. Mr. Bright refused to give any information and said to forget it because nothing was going to be done as he entered his vehicle and left, refusing to give the deputy any further information.

The deputy did speak to the teens through one of those present who spoke English and Spanish and informed them of the complaint. They agreed to leave the property.
