![]() Traffic stop leads to drug charge, confiscation of moonshine web posted October 24, 2006 BETTIS ACADEMY – A Sheriff’s Deputy spotted a car traveling on Highway 25 Saturday night with no rear lights and initiated a traffic stop. When the deputy walked up to the car he saw a passenger place a plastic baggie into his mouth. Once the deputy reached the driver’s door he noticed an “extremely strong smell” of alcohol coming from the car. A second deputy arrived on the scene to assist in the traffic stop. The second deputy asked the front passenger to exit the car, which he did, however; he refused to open his mouth. The man continued to resist the deputies’ demands and was then taken to the ground when he finally spit out the baggie containing what was believed to be crack cocaine. At that time Tony Marcel Merriweather, 38, of Community Road, was taken into custody. As the deputies continued to investigate, the driver and another passenger were asked to exit the car. When the deputies searched the car they found an open pint bottle of a “clear liquid”. Also found in the car were a mason jar and a plastic jug containing a similar liquid. The driver, identified as Dexter Keith Jones, 44, of Ashley Road, Trenton, told the officers the liquid was “moonshine” that he had just recently purchased. A deputy also found what was believed to be marijuana under the driver’s seat. Mr. Jones was also taken into custody. A third man was released at the scene. Mr. Merriweather was awaiting formal charges of possession of crack cocaine and Mr. Jones is also being held on a custody order awaiting charges of possession of marijuana, driving without taillights, and possession of illegal liquor.
