Identity of veteran killed in crash released
web posted November 15, 2005

BETTIS ACADEMY – The identity of a Desert Strom veteran killed in a crash at the intersection of Bettis Academy Road and Highway 25 Sunday has been released. Edgefield County Coroner Thurmond Burnett said Thomas Samuel Hair, 40, of McKenzie Road in Ninety Six, SC died of massive internal injuries at 1:45 pm.

Mr. Hair was unmarried and was a member of the Army National Guard’s 111th Signal Brigade of Greenwood Mr. Burnett said. Also injured in the crash were Mr. Hair’s mother and father who remain hospitalized at the present time. The elder Mr. Hair was said to still be in critical condition after undergoing surgery Sunday afternoon for injuries we were told.

The crash occurred, according the South Carolina Highway Patrol, when Margare McDermott, 80 of Aiken,
driving a 2004 Toyota Camery entered Highway 25 and struck Mr. Hair’s 1996 Ford Explorer in the driver’s side door causing it to overturn partially ejecting the elder Mr. Hair. Mrs. McDermott, her daughter, also of Aiken, and Mr. Hair’s parents were all transported to the MCG Trauma Unit in Augusta following the crash. The elder Mr. Hair was the only occupant in either vehicle that was not wearing a seatbelt.

The collision is still under investigation and charges are still pending.
