![]() Suspected armed robbers cause hit and run crash and manhunt in Bettis Academy - Trenton area web posted December 22, 2006 BETTIS ACADEMY – An armed robbery in Aiken County Thursday afternoon resulted in a manhunt in Edgefield County. As the three suspects, allegedly armed with a shotgun, robbed an Aiken County business they made their escape on Bettis Academy Road with a witness from the robbery in tow. Once in Edgefield County the grey two-door Kia Rio crashed into another vehicle and continued their escape. EMS was called to the scene to treat the woman driver of the car struck for injuries. The Kia was damaged on the left front of the car in the crash. A tag number obtained by Edgefield County deputies came back to an Edgefield County resident. Edgefield County Sheriff’s Deputies, Edgefield, Johnston, and Trenton Police began closing escape routes on Highway 25 above and below the Bettis Academy Road intersection. A witness following the suspects last saw the Kia turn right heading northbound on Highway 25. Another witness, who was traveling on Bettis Academy Road at the time, reported that the Kia passed her throwing items out of the windows. A search of the area by deputies recovered a black ski mask and a black bandana about a mile east of Hyw 25. Deputies also recovered debris along the road that was left after the crash, including the headlight assembly of the Kia Rio reportedly used in the escape. The search continued throughout the afternoon and into the evening with deputies checking side roads in an attempt to locate the suspect vehicle. The search was called off just before 6pm. Deputies continued to patrol the area into the night. The Kia Rio was reported stolen around 6:45pm from the Winn Dixie on Highway 25 in North Augusta near interstate 20. Within a few hours deputies were able to take four individuals, including one female, into custody. They were transported to Aiken County for processing and their identities have not been release at this hour. A partial tag number was used by Edgefield County authorities to track the Kia to the Lakeview Drive resident who reported the car stolen. She was among those arrested. For
