The Merriwether Fire Department responded to a brush fire off Woodlawn Road a little after 8:00 pm, Wednesday night. The fire, said to have been touched off by arcing high voltage power lines, was a repeat occurrence.

Fire officials said Mr. Drew Mims, who lives nearby, told them the fire was touched off Tuesday night and was put out and that repairs were made today by workers with the power company. No one was sure if today's fire was a new event or just stumps that had smoldered and touched off a separate fire.

Firemen walked the perimeter of the burning area in thick small pines to be sure they had extinguished all flames before leaving. The scene was deemed safe and firemen left after about an hour.

MVFD firemen gather atop a hill in the steep terrain where today's fire took them in the right of way of high voltage power lines.
