Three
days, Three Fires, Same location Edgefielddaily.com web posted April 21, 2005 Edgefield Daily.com photo Staff reporting The Merriwether Volunteer Fire Department (MVFD) responded again today, April 21, 2005 to a brush fire off Woodlawn Road on US Forestry Service Road 662. The fire, which is said to have been touched off originally by arcing SCE&G High Voltage power lines running through the area, grew to its largest today around 3:00 PM. By 4:00 PM the fire was burning a steep hillside between 20 to 30 acres uphill from the power lines. A fire break cut from the original fire stopped the fire from spreading towards a nearby home and left the fire burning West towards the Sumpter National Forest. USF Road 662 runs along the North side of the fire and was acting as another firebreak. Merriwether firemen worked two sides of the fire keeping it from jumping the fire break and the road and called in US Forestry Service to handle the major part of the fire. They arrived just before 4:00 PM with heavy equipment to contain the fire. Merriwether Fire Chief Faye Fullmer said it was fortunate winds were very light and the fire was burning relatively low. A SCE&G truck was parked just above the fire and Fullmer stated she did not know where the worker or workers were or what they were doing in the area.
