Technology aids in locating missing children in Edgefield

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted May 10, 2005

As Edgefield Daily.com reported earlier, the Edgefield County Sheriff’s office has issued a press release to announce the “A Child Is Missing” (ACIM) emergency phone service which can make up to 1000 calls per minute in the event of a missing child or others who are under the care of caregivers.

“This is an urgent message from the Edgefield County Sheriff’s office. We are currently looking for a missing child in your area. The missing child’s name and description is…” is the content of the call that would be sent out in the event of a missing child.

The press release stated the alert system can be activated within fifteen minutes once requested by Sheriff Adell Dobey, and the service is free for the county. ACIM is a non-profit organization that uses a high technology telephone alert system to canvas a neighborhood with calls describing the missing person and asking for anyone with information to call their local lawa enforcement agency.

“I feel that one of the most tragic thing that could happen to a family is to have a child lost or missing,” Sheriff Dobey said in the release. “The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office is committed to utilizing all resources available to ensure that if, in the rare case, a child from our county should go missing or is lost we will do all we can to ensure their safe return,”  the statement said.

The ACIM system can also work in tandem with the Amber Alert which requires SLED’s approval, something the ACIM does not require for activation by the Sheriff’s Department. A Child is Missing has been assisting law enforcement since 1997 and to date over 11 million alert calls have been made and is “credited by law enforcement with 91 safe recoveries in the last 38 months,” the release stated.
