Burning Tires Leads to Wanted Men and Foot Chase to Make Arrest
web posted January 3, 2013
COUNTY LINE – Two Sheriff's Deputies
leaving a call of a disturbance on Powell Place noticed a fire with
heavy black smoke coming from a home on Sandy Hill Court nearby. When
they located the fire behind a house on the 200 block, the two men
standing around the burning tires began walking towards the home. After
informing the men it was illegal to burn tires, a records check showed
both men to have outstanding warrants for their arrest.
The old brother, Larry Mays Jr., 55, was wanted out of Georgia but they
would not extradite. The younger brother, Raleigh Lee Mays, 53, was
wanted out of North Augusta for auto theft and Florida for a probation
violation.
When Raleigh Mays was informed he was under arrest he took off running
to avoid being arrested. One deputy fire a Tazer during the initial
phase of the chase when Mays "squared off" at the two deputies. The
prongs of the Tazer missed their mark and the foot chase was on.
Mays ran through a couple back yards before heading into a wooded area
where he was later taken into custody. He was transported to the
Edgefield County Detention Center on a custody hold for resisting
arrest. He will be transferred to North Augusta for the auto theft
charge once the formal charge for resisting can be served and bond
placed. He was also given a warning for burning hazardous materials
(tires).
Larry Mays was informed of his warrant but was not taken into custody
due to no extradition requested on the warrant.
