Deputy forced to shoot pit bull during vandalism call
web
posted January 31, 2008
COUNTY LINE – An Edgefield County Deputy
responding to a call of vandalism ended with the shooting of a pit bull
and two other unidentified breeds of dogs fleeing the scene. The Monday
afternoon call to a home on Casalina Drive, just off Highway 25 south,
was a routine call. The deputy arrived and spoke to the woman who
reported her 2001 Mitsubishi Mirage had been vandalized. The deputy
reported finding two flat tires on the car as well as scratches and
“pry marks” on the car. Then the unexpected happened.
According to police reports, while the deputy was inspecting the damage
a pit bull dog along with two other dogs ran into the woman’s yard and
attacked and killed her one of her cats. The pit bull, “made an
aggressive move in the direction of the (reporting officer) with the
dead cat hanging from its jaws,” and the deputy drew his side arm and
shot the dog once, killing him almost instantly. The other two dogs
fled the scene.
The woman at the home thanked the deputy and informed him the dogs ran
lose in the area. The pit bull had no collar and the owner was unknown
at the time of the report. The deputy completed his report on the
vandalism and advised that additional patrols would be added in the
area. The property damage of the original complaint was listed at $300.
The case involving the shooting and the dogs running at large has been
turned over to the Sheriff’s Animal Control for further investigation.
Animal Control removed the carcass of the pit bull at the time of the
incident.
Four other shooting involving pit bulls and dogs at large by deputies
have taken place since July of 2007. In all of the reported
attacks by EdgefieldDaily.com only one owner has been charged.
A request in December for the number of similar pit bull and dog
attacks reported to the Sheriff's Office has not been received at the
time of this report.
