Edgefield County Man Shot after High Speed Chase

web posted February 9, 2014   10:24 pm

COUNTY LINE An Edgefield County man was shot following a high speed chase that started in North Augusta Sunday night around 7:30 pm. A North Augusta officer attempted a traffic stop due to a possible intoxicated driver and the suspect "took off", leading officers on a high speed chase into Edgefield County. Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputies joined the chase that ended after the driver turned on Rose Drive, got out, and shots were fired.

According to information provided at the scene, the driver turned left off Highway 25 northbound onto Rose Drive, a dirt road, before the chase came to an end. As officers converged towards the car, the driver exited the car and at least two shots were fired, striking the suspect in the left shoulder and the abdomen.

Edgefield County EMS transported the man, said to be in his 60's by family members, to the Trauma Center in Augusta. He was then rushed to surgery for the wounds. His condition was not available.

North Augusta Police Lt. Tim Thornton said the driver hit one or two vehicles while attempting to elude officers around Ascauga Lake Road. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the collisions. It is unknown if there were any injuries.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) was called to the scene to take over the investigation due to an officer being involved in the shooting. Though not confirmed, it is believed the officer involved in the shooting was with the NAPD, not Edgefield County.

Edgefield County Sheriff Adell Dobey spoke with Edgefield Daily and confirmed most of the information gathered on scene.

It is unknown if the suspect was armed or not at the time of the shooting.

We will have updates as they become available.
