Burglary and high speed pursuit keep Deputies busy Monday night

web posted February 26, 2008
COUNTY LINE – The J&L Country Mart on Highway 25 was the scene of a Monday night burglary when two black males were seen inside the store after closing. Edgefield County Deputies converged on the store but arrived shortly after the suspects fled the area. When the first deputy arrived it was confirmed that the two had made entry into the store.

Early reports did not indicate what was stolen from the store that has been the scene of several burglaries over the last three years. It was believed the two may have fled the area in an unknown type of car.

A short time later North Augusta Public Safety asked for assistance for a high speed pursuit of two black males making their way down Ridge Road, not far from the location of the burglary.

The pursuit continued into Edgefield County travelling north and southbound on Highway 25, onto Edwards Avenue, and then back onto Ridge Road until the two stopped the car and fled the area on foot. Edgefield and Aiken County Deputies, The South Carolina Highway Patrol, and the North Augusta Public Safety set up a perimeter in the area and began searching for the two men. It was unknown if the two were involved in the earlier burglary.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol had previously been in pursuit of the vehicle on Interstate 20 before losing sight and North Augusta Police picked up the chase. The pursuit reached speeds above 100 mph at different times.

Authorities were still in the area after 1 am searching for the two suspects. The Aiken County Bloodhound Team was on the scene tracking the two men, one of which ran out of his shoes in his attempt to evade officers.

EdgefieldDaily.com will have more on this breaking story as information becomes available.
