Man Passed Out at the Wheel Arrested for 3rd DUI

web posted March 12, 2013

COUNTY LINE – A 41-year-old Saluda man was arrested early Saturday morning after an Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputy spotted a white car sitting at the intersection of Brightharp Road and Highway 25 with the driver passed out at the wheel around 2:50 am. The deputy approached the driver and found the car still running and in drive. The only thing keeping the car from moving was the emergency brake was on.

The deputy tried to wake the man and then opened the driver's door to try to turn the car off and place it in park, but was unable to reach the keys. A second deputy arrived and was entering the passenger side of the car when the driver, identified as Albert Andre Matthews, awoke.

Matthews then turned off the car and handed to deputy the keys. According to an incident report, Matthews had a strong odor of alcohol about him. A Highway Patrolman was requested to the scene and took over the investigation.

A check of Matthews' license showed it was suspended and the Georgia tag on the car was also suspended. Matthews was charged with driving under suspension for DUI, DUI 3rd offence, failing to surrender a suspended license and no vehicle license.

He was released on a total of $6,049 in bonds Monday morning. No trial date was available.
