Woman Interrupts Theft, Identifies Suspect

web posted September 25, 2012

COUNTY LINE – A Mount Zion Road woman interrupted a burglar breaking into her car in her carport just after 9 pm Saturday. The man fled the scene on foot and the woman jumped in her car to try to follow him while calling 911. While Sheriff's Deputies were converging on the scene the she located the man on a bicycle on Highway 25 near Jacob McKie Road. The man abandoned the bike and ran into a wooded area. The woman was able to give a full description of the suspect, his clothing, and his name.

Deputies search the area in an attempt to locate the suspect, 44-year-old Efrem Leonard Nipper, of Jacob McKie Road, but were unsuccessful. After a half hour long search, an investigator parked his unmarked vehicle and had all other units back out of the area in hopes Nipper would try to make his way back to his residence.

Within minutes Nipper was seen running along the edge of the woods next door to his home and a short foot chase was initiated. Nipper obeyed orders to "get on the ground" and was taken into custody without further incident.

He was transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center where he is awaiting formal charges expected to include burglary in the third degree and breaking and entering a vehicle. Reports did not indicate if anything was stolen form the vehicle.

The bicycle was later recovered near a peach stand and is believed to have been stolen from another nearby home.
