Commercial
air conditioning units targeted for copper theft
web
posted September 27, 2007
COUNTY LINE – It seems a cooper thief has
returned to Edgefield County with two six-ton air conditioner units
found dismantled and all the copper tubing removed. The crime is
believed to have occurred over the weekend but was not discovered until
Monday. When the first Sheriff’s Deputy arrived he reported finding the
two units “completely gutted out.” Two other units at the business were
left undisturbed. The county suffered a string of similar thefts
earlier this year that left almost a dozen churches with tens of
thousands of dollars in damages in its wake. Sheriff’s Investigators do
not believe the latest theft is related.
During the earlier string of
crimes the charge for copper thefts went
from being considered misdemeanors to being labeled felony grand
larceny due to the damage left behind during the theft.
The recent theft occurred at a business on the 1200 block of Edgefield
Road (Hyw. 25-south) near Stephens Road. A Sheriff’s Investigator
arrived on the scene to process evidence and attempted to obtain
fingerprints in addition to photographing the scene.
Though this is the first similar crime since the January and February
string, reports of window air conditioning units being stolen recently
from homes in the area have been reported along with similar thefts in
neighboring North Augusta. The Sheriff’s Office and North Augusta
Public Safety have been working together concerning those thefts and a
possible suspect in Edgefield County.
