Hit and run driver airlifted after second crash

web posted November 26, 2007
COUNTY LINE – A minor collision at Greg’s Gas Plus on Highway 25 Saturday ended with one of the drivers being flown to MCG Trauma Center after fleeing the scene and crashing on Stephens Road. A Sheriff’s Deputy on routine patrol spotted the collision and radioed for Aiken County Deputies to respond to the scene. Then one of the drivers took off in a blue Oldsmobile heading north on Highway 25 at speeds over 100 mph.

The deputy gave pursuit following the car until it turned on Square Circle Ranch Road. Once the car reached the dirt portion of the road the woman driver crashed and when the deputy exited his patrol car the woman backed up, barely missing the deputy, and took off again. The chase continued into Aiken County and then back into Edgefield County.

Once back in Edgefield County the woman crossed Highway 25 and entered Edward Drive then on to Shortcut Road. Supervisors radioed the pursuing deputy to end the pursuit, which he did. A short time later the deputy found the car on Stephens Road where it left the roadway and rolled, trapping the woman inside.

Merriwether and County Line Firefighters arrived on the scene a short time later and began the task of extricating the woman from the car as additional deputies and the South Carolina Highway Patrol began arriving on the scene.

Firefighters and EMS personnel worked for almost twenty minutes freeing the woman from the wreckage as a helicopter landed in a nearby yard. The woman was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown to the passenger side of the car in the crash. Once the woman was immobilized and placed in the ambulance she was stabilized and then loaded in the helicopter and taken to MCG.

All traffic on Stephens Road was blocked for over an hour as emergency vehicles and police sorted out the events that had taken place.

Authorities on the scene stated the woman was involved in another hit and run crash in Augusta shortly before hitting the second vehicle at the Greg’s Gas Plus. The woman was also found to be in possession of drugs. The Highway Patrol was in the process of filing multiple charges against the woman, who was informed before transport she was under arrest.

The woman will face a charge of failure to stop for blue lights in Edgefield County.
