Old Macedonia Church donates to Tree of Hope

web posted December 19, 2009
COUNTY LINE – Joe Mosley (Left) and Derrick Jones (Right), part of the Men’s Ministry of Old Macedonia Baptist Church, were busy Friday morning loading Christmas presents donated by members of the church as a part of the Tree of Hope project. Mr. Jones said this is the eighth year the church has been involved, and from looking at the results, they were very involved.

Mr. Mosley said each child is listed by a number and placed on the tree like ornaments. That ornament includes the list of items that child has asked to receive for Christmas. “Once you take that child, you commit to purchase all the gifts,” Mr. Mosley said, adding that sometimes people will join together to complete a list. “Otherwise, a lot of these kids wouldn’t have anything for Christmas.”

Mr. Jones said the presents, all listed by numbers of the respective child whose identity is unknown, were being taken to the North Augusta Middle School Gym as the center collection point. “From there the agency will redistribute the gifts to the children,” Jones said. “The area they cover is Aiken and Edgefield Counties.”

The members of Old Macedonia, lead by Pastor Limuer Myers, obviously will have warmed the hearts of many this Christmas by their generosity. When the door to the large room was opened, the room was filled with groups of packages, bicycles, and toys with only a small walkway through the gifts.

Last month the Men’s Ministry, with the aid of a grant from Wal-Mart, was able to purchase 137 turkeys and then collected the associated food items through donations to finish out the Thanksgiving boxes.  Each had the makings of a complete Thanksgiving dinner.
